I've been using an old 9ft, silstar spinning rod and not doing very well, so wanting a better rod and reel for the pier for a few weeks now and after trying to find a bargain or two from the likes of Go Outdoors and failing miserably, I decided to call into Moonfleet this morning to see what they had.
I didn't want to spend a lot, as I'm only just getting back into shore fishing after more than 30 years and I'm quite likely to lose interest again when it starts getting cold and wet
Anyway, they had an 11ft rod/reel combo, by "fishzone" allegedly suited for rock or pier for £35, which fit the bill, so with the addition of a spool of Poseidon 25lb mono, I set off to see what I could catch.
The weather was warm and dry but blowing a bit and the blow seemed to have put off most of the loonies, with the end of the pier fairly quiet.

I started just this side of the green waste bin in the picture, casting over the wall and was doing okay but the inshore current along the pier was a pain in the arse.
I hooked a sand eel after about 10mins or so and hooked into a mackerel a couple of casts later but it dropped off.
I kept at it for a bit then noticed there was no one bothering with the "small wall", probably because of the strength of the wind. I thought; "why not?" and moved across.
The cross wind was a bit outrageous and it was taking about twice as much line off the spool than the distance of the cast but I got the hang of winding in the slack toot sweet and then working the feathers ( proper old fashioned feathers on 2/0 hooks
) in the tidal flow and after four or five shots hooked a couple of mackerel
I had another sand eel, then another couple of mackerel over about half an hour then decided that would do me for this week.
Well chuffed with the cheap combo from Moonfleet, as well as the straight forward, no nonsense advice:thumbup:

cheers
