hi just thinking of fishing shields in morn,i usualy fish for plaice but fancy a change ,has a few codling been showing thro week.i do have a little knowledge of pier and know crab for codling is usualy best bait but do any other baits fish as crab can be scarse now and not willing to pay silly prices for it anymore.

Any bait and you have a chance of codling. I used rag and mussel cocktail the other night and got a red codling albeit from the cliffs, and the bites were constant. Good luck whatever you do.

crab possibly still best bait but have known lads to catch the coddy on lug worm this time of year on wards also if u have already have other bait option mussel , squid etc , it would not harm your chances
been led to believe there has been afew borderline possibly the odd size taken today

got a few frozen crab may try that with rag just got to be far away as possible from the makki bashers

last year used rag with razor cocktail and blacks with razor and bluey cocktail big baits winter months.
like most places you fish if the fish are there then you may just get lucky

well i tried the post this morn on shields pier two and a half hrs off high water,used frozen crab and rag .good tide pull and never lost any gear which is a bonus,anyway not a nibble but thats nothing unusual for me just fancied a change to my normal 40 odd mark.getting a bit bored of fishing now after an hr bored silly what does one do when he has fished all of his life.

what used like is where i can fish all day 2 rods mebbe 3 on medium size and just chill , now days i just fish club matches through poor health
hopefully it will be different this winter with a freezer full of bait
