Do any of you guys use normal heavier line as a leader or is there a big difference or reasons you should not use it.And have you ever come across a tool that tapers the line as a friend of mine says his dad made one.Think this might be dangerous.

i only use shockleader mate but i honestly couldnt see anything wrong with using 70 or 80 bs line.
The tool you speak of i havent even heard of one never mind came across one,

Think it will be a tapered knot he is talking about son and yes I use standard 4oz bulk spools of ordinary line as I use longer than normal shock leaders for piers and cliffs so cheap is good for me 60lb-70lb just make sure its quiet supple the nylon springy type is a bit awkward at times.

Can't see why not mate after all it's just a stronger piece of line that can resist the force at the beginning of a chuck. Never heard of a tapering line tool like.

if there was such a tapering line tool ..ideal for longer lengths for longer drops when fishing after all the tapered part of the leader is to give a smaller knot

And it's 10lb bs for every 1oz of lead +10lb bs. This means that a 5oz lead will need 50lb plus 10lb = 60lb

I Never buy "Proper shockleader" i just use 60lb normal line buy in big spools hell of lot cheaper.

I was told by the bloke in the tackle shop to just buy 60-70 lb line for leader and if he's telling me that rather than selling me more expensive leader it'll do for me.

hi there. i used to use 55-60lb line for shockleader and rig bodies. i still use them but have recently added sakuma shock leader 60 lb and sakuma rig body 60 lb. the difference in the line is very noticeable with shockleader line less stretchy compared to the rig body which is smooth and stretch . dunno why as the rig body is meant to take the stress of a cast as well. i feel no different when casting . when my current spool of shockleader runs out and rig body runs out i will be reverting back to normal 60lb line as it suited me just fine..

Wish i could get hold of a tool that does tapered shockleaders,(never heard of one though), spend about £8 for 5 and seem to go through a canny few.

You don't need tapered shockleaders.

Big Spools of Powerflex, Ultima etc..Aren't that expensive and will last you a while.

70lb will do everything you need. Heavier lines have less stretch than lighter lines therefore are good for power casting as it transfers the energy to the rod.

A tapered leader is the best to achieve a small knot (blood knot) pal

the only downside to that is, a tapered leader is not the B/S throughout the length of the leader, no way would i power cast using tapered leaders, accident waiting to happen in my opinion

But it's the 60/70lb break strain that's casting out, so the good few turns of this on your spool should be enough for powerful casting. The thin tapered part will be nowhere near the cast.
