Side Mount Remote Control

Went down to boat today (the Tom Jones) expecting a few issues after the winter. Auxiliary started first pull; however once the key was in the ignition on the side unit the key would not turn. I've avoided using undue pressure and the units less than 2 yr old and not heavily used - I'm assuming it's a barrel issue rather than an electrical issue - but my level of expertise starts with a hammer so any advice would be much appreciated.

try a good squirt of wd40 down the barrel and on the key, shove the key in and out a few times before attempting to turn

I thought that was standard with Land Rovers? Happened on both mine.
