Well the day came at last, my first trip to put myself up against the big skate. Set off on Friday and had a hazard free drive up with experianced skate angler Dave, bit crack with the local lads about the fishing from the previous days catch of only 1 skate and a couple of pints later and it was bed for a good rest.

We had booked into a local b&b with a nice view of the sea.

Set off with Dave at 8.30am to meet the skipper and get ready for the first day out, a fantastic bit of the UK this....

DAY ONE

After only a 10min steam out, we arrived at our first mark and it was not far short of 500ft, Dave set about sorting the rigs out as i chopped the bait up and the skipper set the anchor.

Four rods out between me and Dave and fingers crossed the skate liked the smell of our mackerel and coalie baits.

We got a call on the radio "fish on" from a boat fishing about 1 mile away and no sooner had we heard that one of the reels started to go click,click,click...fish on. The duty fell to me for the first fish and i got strapped in and battled away.

Picture111189-1.jpg

I just could not move it off the bottom, both Dave and the skipper had seen this all before but for me i am used to hitting a fish and be in control not the other way around.....inexperiance showed and after a 15min battle that was all one sided i gave it that little bit to much stick and the hook pulled and the fish was away.

Gutted more so about this than any other fish i have had hooked up with but we never had to wait long for a second chance, the other rod started to go and Dave struck making contact before the fish dropped the bait and away.

By this time i thought i would cheer myself up and put a light rod over with size 5/0 hooks and see what else was down there, i never had to wait long and landed my first ever black mouth dogfish, rare i am told.

Picture111192.jpg

Time started ticking on but when the tide dropped off we started getting abit of interest, Dave striking into fish for the bait to come back with great big bite marks out them and bare in mind we are using two whole mackerel.

But it was the lighter rod that had the next hook up again, i wound down and struck into something with abit pull, tope?, small skate? conger?, thorny? few guesses chucked its way but then it hit the surface, a new PB conger of 25lb 2oz...chuffed and thought well that will do me for the day if i dont catch anything else.

Picture111197.jpg

A couple of hours more passed and winding up 500ft to change the bait was becoming hard work and i was hurting all over but it is amazing how quick you forget the pain when Dave shouts "fish taken line on outside left" i had my gear on already so got strapped in and held on for dear life....the bloody thing had only gone at jumped on the 20-30lb class outfit and it was not happy.

This battle went on for 1hr 15mins and everytime i thought i had it beat it dived down and stripped the line away, twice we seen colour and twice it had other ideas. Then panic stations...for me anyway the fish had picked up the two other rods and line was in a right mess but Dave and the skipper had it in hand and after what seemed like hours of pumping and winding it hit the surface as tired as i was.

My first skate and what a skate 191lb......

Fish was a tagged fish so the info was taken, measured and returned to fight again.....so a new PB :) 191lb....yes 191lb (female) beats my PB by only 151lb :)

We had a couple more takes and we landed strap conger upto 6lb and some dogfish but that was it for the first day.

Day 2

After a few drinks, a late night and a curry that never settled well, the last thing we wanted to see was a bad forecast and ice on the ground but it is November so you get on with it.

The Plan was a day of two halfs, try the same spot as again am then up lines and try a hole closer in.The sun was just popping up and the frost was melting quick, we looked out at the mist/steam as we headed out.

Picture111212.jpg

5 rods down this time and after about 3 hours and many bait changes no interest from anything big so up anchor and off to the hole. Not there long and Dave strikes into a run, "Skate on" after a battle a nice tagged skate hit the surface and was returned followed by a couple of dogfish.

Then it was my turn again, little knock knock but the skipper spotted this and got the rod rod ready while i got the butt pad on, "skate on"

I had a bit more trust in the gear now so bullied it abit more and after 35mins a nice male skate of 110lb hit the surface, over the moon again.

It was also tagged and put abck quick to fight again.

Dave decided to drop the 8lb class rod down with some squid i had taken but never used, it was not long before he was pumping the rod up..."skate on" what skate on? a 8lb rod and beach size reel..this was going to be fun..well it was for Dave and he got it off the bottom, not a monster but a nice seat box lid size skate.

This was to be out last fish of the day and with the rain on its way and a long drive home we set off.

Had a great time and a big thank you to Dave and the skipper for keeping me right when playing the fish and putting us on the fish.

Something i wont forget.:)

The pain in your arms and back when you pull up and it has other ideas and pulls you down, a couple of times the drag was abit much and i was holding onto the side of the boat until someone knocked it down a couple. Great fun thou.

More pics of the smaller congar as well...

Hi Rich,

Great report and some cracking pictures. Had a great weekend that for some lived up to expectations ( only joking). 191 llb is a cracking fish by any standards and will be a difficult fish to follow up.

What you very diplomatically failed to mention was the " tale of the tape " ...or should that be the scales. More of that later.

When I take my boat up there we usually use a "skate virgin" gets the first fish way of deciding who lands what as opposed to a its my rod , my fish . Obviously Rich had never caught a skate so whatever happened the first fish was going to be his and after a 5 hour drive of listening to him saying that all he wanted was a fish over 40 lb there was no doubt that this was the way to plan the fishing.

It may seem odd to NE anglers that people land fish in rotation regardless of which rod it is hooked on, but when you have just landed a fish after a 1hr + tug of war the last thing on your mind for the next half hour is to reel another one in. So the system works very well for skate fishing and gives everyone a chance of landing one. With 4 rods fishing most of the time it maximises the time the baits are in the water.

Day one was a normal charter boat day fishing in around 480 ft of water on a tried and tested mark. Rich soon learnt that bait fishing in that depth is dammed hard work to say the least and most people loose the interest in catching small stuff quite quickly when they have reeled in a few times...Rich did manage 18 times ( not that he was counting)

Day two was giving a very iffy forecast for the afternoon so we went a similar distance to day 1 early doors with a plan to move closer in later in the day. Even the furthest marks are only 10 mins run back to shelter but with a 50-60 mph wind forecast for the afternoon we had to keep the options open. The two boats up there are both run by the same person so regular radio contact is kept between the two boats as to who is catching what. Along with a smattering of inter skipper rivalry. We were fishing about 800 yards apart and by ten am is was clear that neither boat was getting so much as a sniff at the baits.

So after a brief discussion with Matty the skipper it was decided to try a new spot closer in, shallower water and closer to harbour if it did cut up rough. This is always a dilemma for a charter skipper as they get paid to produce the goods for a paying punter so they fish the proven marks which in their case is beyond the 400 ft line. In this case I had fished with Snatcher a few years prior to this trip and we had caught fish far closer in around the 2-300 ft mark so it wasn't so much of a gamble and we could hardly complain as we had chosen the mark not the skipper.

The move proved to be a success with the first skate coming within 20 minutes of the anchor going down, albeit a rather small specimen which I landed and followed soon after by the 100+ male that Rich caught. The smaller current and lower depth meant that bait fishing with finer gear was possible and I had taken a 10-15 class greys longboat and penn 975ld onboard since the reel Rich had taken with him had broken the day before. This was kitted out with a running ledger boom , 6/0 hook and a short wire trace since we had been bitten off by spurdog the day before. Baited with a full squid and hopefully would produce a spurdog/thornback/conger/cuckoo ray ....but guess what, a skate on gear you do not want to be hooking skate on which unbelievably started to move off the bottom and was landed within 30 minutes.

So back to the tale of the tape.

Rich ...2 skate ...191 & 100 for a total of 291 lb
Me.... 2 Skate ...25 & 6..........for a grand total of 31 lb!!!!

But still an unbelievable trip and will be going again at Easter. The skipper who runs these trips is a member here and they run them in November and Easter. If you fancy having a go at this I would seriously recommend it as a way to get a new heaviest fish and if you need the gear it is all available to hire so no need to buy anything special. Anyone wanting to tow there own boat up there just drop me a pm and I will help in sorting out whats needed.

Great weekend , great company and some lovely fish/fishing.

Your not wrong and as i said big thank you Dave for your experianced words during the battles, as anyone that thinks they are good at NE boat fishing or wrecking should chuck everything they know out the window of the car on the drive up and start again as tactics and methods just dont work in 500ft of water with 100+ fish :).

I will be wanting to go back again but i think it will take 2 months for my skin to turn pink again from this nice shad of purple and black.

As Dave said a top area to fish and details of the charter boats can be sent if anyone wants them.

I would say i spent £340 for 3 days away all in.

Brilliant report Rich , and I'm genuinely happy for you that your trip turned out so well ............... but , am I the only angler that really dosn't get the monster fish thing??
I watch all kinds of fishing programmes and these catches of enormous sharks , billfish , skate and the likes leaves me cold
I am very envious of the conger you caught mind , I'd love to catch a big conger , 40 or 50 lb would be ample big enough though :D

Ray

Thats the hired skippers job of the day, i dare anyone to pull an anchor up 500ft by hand, the boat did the work of pulling the anchor up and it still took 15mins.

I also love the sport of fishing for 3-5lbers but you dont look back years later to come and say i caught a 4lber that day...for me i will never forget landing something that was 1 stone more than me and the fight you get was out this world.

I think you answered your own question in your thread...i want a 50lb conger?? why do you want a 50lb conger a 1lber not do? its all to do with what everyone likes and wants to catch, if a 1lber makes you happy and gives you sport, go fo it.

I go trout fishing and know i wont catch anything bigger than 4lb in the lakes i fish but i love it and keep going back as its what i like doing...whatever makes you happy fishing wise is all you should do and no one can say other wise...i see kids jumping around on the pier so happy with a 4" coalie and thats what its all about.

nice one rich - you planning easter now just give me a bit more notice then im in next time. You could have done better i think as it is a poor show to just beat your pb by 151lb.

i think you enjoy smiling really.
