I am just getting the details together for a trip up to Oban for a days skate fishing. I have e-mailed Adrian lauder, the skipper of the Gannet regarding prices etc and recommended B&B,s. Havent got the full details as yet,but if the price is not to high would any of you lads out there be interested.

Skate Fishing aboard tsmv gannet is £480 per day for up to 8 persons, that includes all tackle, rods, reels, hooks, sinkers, etc and lunch, tea or coffee. For a good view regarding skate fishing go to www.tsmvgannet.co.uk

bot further to drive(!) but see what sort of deal you can get from Andy Jackson - Laurenca II

he\'s definately up there when it comes to finding the biguns, canny scenery to boot!

been out a few times with him, and hired orkneys from him, nice bloke, used to live the other side of Alston before upping sticks to the west coast. the pub in Kilchoan does decent B&B and the landlord\'s from South Shileds but I don\'t hold that against him! there\'s a few other pubs/B&B\'s on the peninsula from about 18 quid a night

Hiya,

Personally I wouldn\'t go out on the ****** if it was the last boat floating! ****** and his incredible shrinking fish have quite a reputation up there, his 238lber shrunk 3\" on it\'s length and 2\" on it\'s wingspan and also only managed to weigh 208lb on it\'s recapture.

I\'d say more on him, but I dont want this board to get into trouble ;)

If you cant get Ronnie Campbell (Laura Dawn) or Donald McLean (Cheviot) then Andy Jackson would be the third choice.

Or if there is only a couple of you coming up and you don\'t mind fishing out of Lochaline, I\'m up there most weekend and normally have space for a couple of bodies.. free of charge of course since it\'s a private run boat.

Oh and for a factual view on skate fishing have a look at www.catchalot.co.uk/tagindx.htm
:P

Hiya,

Thanks Alan :)

I\'ve still a load of work to do to it, the skate gallery still has a lot of photos to be added.

I\'ve just added a secure forum for the Tagging programme in a bit to help the feedback on tag returns. :)

Hiya,

at the moment the one it\'s there is private and for taggers only. However I\'m going to add a public one & and online recapture form.

never been out on a charter boat from Oban, but one way to look at it is how many times does the \'laura dawn\' get mentioned in the angling press, pretty much monthly!

Hiya,

Yup Mark, in my book that speaks volumes. I\'ve fished with Ronnie a few times back in the mid 90ies. He is a good skipper that works hard to get you fish and give you value for money, unlike some who just want your money.

I could sit here all day telling you things about the ****** but I had better leave that to your own judgement ;) ;)

Thanks for the advise lads. I,ll take a look at the options you have all mentioned and see if i can get a better deal from one of them.
As to the incredible shrinking skate, I was there at its capture and can confirm it hit 238ib on the scales.
Catchalot, can you PM me with any information regarding ******. The more info I have ( good or bad) the better. Thanks.

Hiya,

Well someone needs his scales checked... again, it is a big fish, I cant argue with that but there is no way that fish weighed 238lb. When I first seen the pic I gave it 200lb - 210lb at the absolute max as did Ronnie & Donald. The fact that it was later caught measuring 3 inches shorter & 2 inches less on the wingspan and low and behold it was 208lb... very strange that the only skate that has ever shrunk in size on it\'s recapture just happens to be the one that was supposidly a record breaker :)

This is almost the same as his claimed 86lb Tope that never was 86lb

Sorry lads (but you must\'ve seen this coming), I\'ve had to do a bit with the old editing pencil.

Mebbies the fish had been on a diet ;)

No Problem Tony, did,nt mean to cause any problems for the board.
Thanks Catchalot, Only saw the scales on the day, did,nt actualy see the measurements.

that you causing trouble again mr holt....tut tut....

on the other hand a friend on mine caught a skate on john keggies \"oberon\" this year and had a fish which was something like 230Lb+ on the new tables and weighed on scales went 205lb, know which i would have taken.....lol

it was weighed on a flat calm day so no bouncy scales, but maybe not certified scales.....i dunno....

les

Respect to that man who held 17stone up on pair of scales :o . Davy is right about Ronnie Campbell , excellent boat and real good skipper .

i see the skate aren\'t finding you unapproachable these days ;)

got myself a new toy for the skate, an AVET EX 4/0 2 speed, in BLUE......

got a silver one for tony, canny wait to give it a go
