Slinky 17-7-10 the most awful ........

(Most awful) ....... Filleting session to date :) a whole 2 hours :) :) :) .... (me back is breaking) .. :)
but after a bit mathematics I reckon I managed a fillet every 1.7 minutes and that was some of the fish into the 11+lb and 8+lb and many into 5+lb stamp ... wow! what a day !.....

After a week of watching the forcast (I was confident, and as keith has already mentioned in another post) XCWeather was spot on with wind direction and force and shower predictions.

So, bearing in mind the forcast and the tide Tony and I set off at 3.30am to fish the tide up and over the top and get done before the wind got back up again ...... we tried, as we all do the close in wrecks but not a lot to be had, the odd fish here and there but nothing to write home about ... it seemed this was to be one of those "keep your feet on the ground" days when it just goes to prove that even when you have all the ticks in the box if the fish dont want to play then they simply dont play.

Today was the day of the Whiting with most wrecks covered in them taking bait from hooks as fast as you could bait up ..... (and bait ie mackerel were around but not in any great numbers, we seldom had more than 3 in the box for use at any one time.)

Initial highlight of the day was again feeling the familiar tug of a whiting and deciding to bring it up and release when on the retrieve there was a sudden heavy tug........ temporarily, then a few turns further up and it turned into a fighting heavy weight feeling well into double territory ....
boy this fish took almost as much line as I could bring back until finally as it hit surface we found it was a nice 11.5lbd cod that must have been swimming around the trace eying up the whiting then got caught tail and side on ..... phew it was heavy.

after some 6 hours or so from meet up we were both beginning to think maybe the haul of 6 or so was going to be enough for the day so we started our way back in wreck by wreck ........ until (thanks mate) a call from bert who identified a wreck he and keith were at that was simply manic ... and luckily it was less than a mile from our present position ..... :)

we got there and attempted several times to pass on the now traditional liquid breakfast but it was almost impossible to do so because of the amount of sheer "catching" being done by bert and keith, this wreck (or just off the wreck) was teeming with wide open jawed fish.

We dropped a line and "Instantly" were both into cod. What continued I have never seen before (although I`ve had a few fish frenzies already this season) everyone on all boats were reeling in fish at the same time, then when they broke surface some were single hook ups some were double hook ups and some were treble hook ups ... it was simply astounding. We've all been there when you hit that purple patch and for 20 minutes everyone catches ........ no patch here, we must have stayed 3 hours and it never cooled off.
We came away at about 1.00pm, shortly after bert and keith (I think it was about 1.00, but to be honest time had lost me) we left not because it had slowed but because we'd caught enough and were totally worn out.
what a day, missed out on loads of pictures as we were both fishing all the time :) (as my aches and pains are telling me now)

A Big thanks to bert and Keith for guidance .........

Conditions were as expected, flat at 4.00am with a growing SW wind and a few showers, the sea was up and a bit lumpy by lunchtime but ...... it was all over by then :)

Without doubt the most exhilarating wrecking experience ever ........ highly recommended :)

and it must surely open the debate once again of baits and/or lures .....
from the moment we hit that wreck I/we never used bait (not enough time to bait a hook), and lures were kept very simple .... to be honest I used one pirk and one hokkai string in this manic time and came home with them ... :)

A few pics of the day (whilst I check if I have enough video to make a post)

early morning (just before sunrise) ....

Absolute class!! Brill report Norman it's always good to have lack of pics mate thoroughly enjoyed the read so the hotel in california got a good airing lol

Nice1 Norman, that wreck had 4 boats on when we passed, it will have 20 on Sunday due to the radio chatter.

Sounds like you hit that shoal we had last Friday, great feeling it is.

Well done on a cracking cod as well 11.5oz.

Fantastic report Norm! :):) I'm still grinning ear to ear.

Nice doubler! I bet it was fun to reel in, I had to butcher the set of daylites I was using during the "frenzy" and the next set I found in the bag had four hooks, I was convinced I had four or five on during one drift but it turned out to be a 4lber hooked sideways, I couldn't of handled an 11lber at that stage of the morning.

Cheers!!!............til next week.......I'm cancelling our trip to Turkey the week after. :D

Love reading your catch reports Norman , glad you had a day to remember , I'm just thinking though , up Amble there aren't that many wrecks to go at , so it would be difficult to miss the one with the fish on as long as you are prepared to motor about a bit , trouble is , sometimes none of them have many fish on .
I might try Royal Quays next season, if they let riff raff like me in there :) In the mean time , I think I'd better get my boat back in the water sharpish and see whats about up here :D

well done norman and crew, looks like you had a great day,i am also a bit envy on the cod ,because the last couple of times i've been out we have only hit 2 or 3 cod all day ,The novelty has worn off a bit since the early spring run,we were out last week over 6 wreeks and hit the perfect drift every time(witch never happens) and to the disapointment of a few maki scotchies, and whities and big waves we headed in to closer grounds ,we had another cod and a 5lb ling ,i might head up you way next sesh lol.

A cracking trip and report Norman, well done. I don't know what's happened to all the mackeral; either there's too many of them to get through when you don't want them or too few when you want bait.

Hopefully there are still some left for us who are planning to try and find a few wrecks and fish tomorrow. :)

Cracking report Norman and some great pics!

Tony will know why i never get many pics as you don't get time when the fishing is that frantic ;) Just a shame i can't find some of the bigger cod.

Looking foward to your next report already!!

:D

Craziness it really was...2 boats then 3 boats all digging in...I cannot imagine what it must have looked like down on the bottom :o

Surpasses all previous experiences - like Norman said you hit the odd purple patch here and there on your travels but this was on another level :D

...and yes I bored the family with the tales at the meal last night :red:;):D

Am still shattered...body aches all over

Cheers as ever Norm and also to Keith and Bert for "sharing" :D

haha cheers mate, check the vid I think it just about sums it up :) :)

I`m still aching yet from reeling and filleting .....

I did learn a lot ..... seriously ... basically, if your not catching it's not because there are no fish in the sea, its because they're shoaling on a different wreck so either .... catch or go , they are always around ..... somewhere . so just go and find.

cheers for replies lads

:)
