(Most awful) ....... Filleting session to date
a whole 2 hours
.... (me back is breaking) ..
but after a bit mathematics I reckon I managed a fillet every 1.7 minutes and that was some of the fish into the 11+lb and 8+lb and many into 5+lb stamp ... wow! what a day !.....
After a week of watching the forcast (I was confident, and as keith has already mentioned in another post) XCWeather was spot on with wind direction and force and shower predictions.
So, bearing in mind the forcast and the tide Tony and I set off at 3.30am to fish the tide up and over the top and get done before the wind got back up again ...... we tried, as we all do the close in wrecks but not a lot to be had, the odd fish here and there but nothing to write home about ... it seemed this was to be one of those "keep your feet on the ground" days when it just goes to prove that even when you have all the ticks in the box if the fish dont want to play then they simply dont play.
Today was the day of the Whiting with most wrecks covered in them taking bait from hooks as fast as you could bait up ..... (and bait ie mackerel were around but not in any great numbers, we seldom had more than 3 in the box for use at any one time.)
Initial highlight of the day was again feeling the familiar tug of a whiting and deciding to bring it up and release when on the retrieve there was a sudden heavy tug........ temporarily, then a few turns further up and it turned into a fighting heavy weight feeling well into double territory ....
boy this fish took almost as much line as I could bring back until finally as it hit surface we found it was a nice 11.5lbd cod that must have been swimming around the trace eying up the whiting then got caught tail and side on ..... phew it was heavy.
after some 6 hours or so from meet up we were both beginning to think maybe the haul of 6 or so was going to be enough for the day so we started our way back in wreck by wreck ........ until (thanks mate) a call from bert who identified a wreck he and keith were at that was simply manic ... and luckily it was less than a mile from our present position .....
we got there and attempted several times to pass on the now traditional liquid breakfast but it was almost impossible to do so because of the amount of sheer "catching" being done by bert and keith, this wreck (or just off the wreck) was teeming with wide open jawed fish.
We dropped a line and "Instantly" were both into cod. What continued I have never seen before (although I`ve had a few fish frenzies already this season) everyone on all boats were reeling in fish at the same time, then when they broke surface some were single hook ups some were double hook ups and some were treble hook ups ... it was simply astounding. We've all been there when you hit that purple patch and for 20 minutes everyone catches ........ no patch here, we must have stayed 3 hours and it never cooled off.
We came away at about 1.00pm, shortly after bert and keith (I think it was about 1.00, but to be honest time had lost me) we left not because it had slowed but because we'd caught enough and were totally worn out.
what a day, missed out on loads of pictures as we were both fishing all the time
(as my aches and pains are telling me now)
A Big thanks to bert and Keith for guidance .........
Conditions were as expected, flat at 4.00am with a growing SW wind and a few showers, the sea was up and a bit lumpy by lunchtime but ...... it was all over by then
Without doubt the most exhilarating wrecking experience ever ........ highly recommended
and it must surely open the debate once again of baits and/or lures .....
from the moment we hit that wreck I/we never used bait (not enough time to bait a hook), and lures were kept very simple .... to be honest I used one pirk and one hokkai string in this manic time and came home with them ...
A few pics of the day (whilst I check if I have enough video to make a post)
early morning (just before sunrise) ....
Tonys big lure which did get an airing (well for a few minutes anyway before returning to the tackle box)
My 11.5lbd cod
Tony into a decent cod ....
And for his species hunt a fair coley
bert and Keith both into fish together at wreck "XXY"
Tony with (One of his) double hook ups ...
And another double hook up for Keith ...
An Awesome days fishing ....... many thanks to crew Tony and again to bert and keith for the fun of the day .....
cheers
