Weather Forecasts are getting better .......
XC (as keith said) was spot on today not only on the direction and strength but on the actual hour it would all change.

Early morning start again today with a 4.30am meet up in marina carpark,
just the two of us Tony and myself today as Steve was detained elsewhere ... work ! ....
Had thought about a "guest angler" today but decided it may be a touch unfair due to the forecast and may well put a new lad off for life if the sea came up as per the forecast ....
and it did , see the pics .....

After repeated Manic days at sea over the last few trips we were well aware of the fact that "It's not always like that" and were ready to come back down to earth when catches returned to normal .

As Keith mentioned in his report , this was the day ....... although still not a bad day by ordinary measures.

Started the day at a close in wreck just outside the piers but zilch catching so moved on to a wreck that had been producing well of late ....
Mackerel for bait were there for the asking about 24 inches below the surface as they were being caught on the lower hook just as the upper hook hit the water.

All set, on target, pirks at the ready, baited muppets at the ready and shads in awaiting .......

We caught steady all day (whilst being battered by the sea and west wind) but more of a standard summertime catch and not the manic hauls of the past few weeks.
Many small codling put back along with small(ish) ling with the mid range 4ld to 6lb being kept for the pan.
We did have highlights like both into fish together on shads which was almost a signal as the start of crazy time again but this soon fizzled out, also the double header catch now and again but ...... not often enough to be called manic.

Tried a while further out at about 8 miles but the sea was enormous, the drift impossible and no fish so we came back in (rather slowly against the strengthening wind) to meet up once again with the lads on Shady and the group on JFK.

Managed the wind until about 11.30 when it (as forecast) got just too much so we made our way back in.

All in all and not counting the last few weeks it was a good haul of a dozen good cod between us but (as has already be said) in comparisson to recent trips a tad down on catch rates. Still, "That's what it's all about".

Roll on next week , what will we find ....... ?

just a few basic pics of the day .... (as ever)

Well done lads, looks like the sea was a bit bigger than last weekend:eek: Good to see you and Tony still got into a few decent fish.

Always enjoy the reports and pics

Jonny:)

like your avatar Jonny :D

yes great day - the lower back region is tightening up nicely in readiness for the radox bath later :D

...restful day tomorrow followed by "traditional" Bankers Monday drinking with friends

Cheers again Norman ;)

Aye Jonny, twas the best pic of the day , well done ... 11lbs of fish in one lift .... could be called a doubler I suppose :) :)

Good catch Norman as always, :) how fast was the drift ?, looks like it was a bit snotty coming in, Saw the windy forcast and decided to trout fish the derwent, and the swells on there were big as well, with a 20 minute monsoon chucked in...:o

didn't note the speed chris, our guage is how long over the wreck and today was about 15 seconds at worst then easing to about 30 seconds, not long to manage your line at the varying depths of bits of wreckage ..... I would say tackle losses were high :) :)

but I christened one of these with a nice codling today ... first fish to the painted fish pirk ......... (a blue/green/white one)

If i could have gotten hold of some fresh peeler i'd have been anchored on the rough stuff today but my wanted ad for them was removed last night ( sorry mods ).Nice looking pirks Norman, got the same mould myself but only decorated with silver tape. Did you do the artwork or TGW....

Hi Norman. You look to have a had a similar day to ours yesterday, except we headed out to a few wrecks and then picked them off one-by-one on the way back in. I guess we covered at least one of the same wrecks that you fished.
There weren’t many cod showing and they were far outnumbered by the ling, and of course the mackerel. We went through the full range of tactics starting with shads, then pirks and chunks of mackerel on longer traces. Baited muppets and lures did the business, we left off the pirks as the macks kept taking them even with a single 6/0 hook.
Our cod too were full of star fish and a few squat lobsters; a couple of the ling coughed up half digested fish to freshen the decks. Not nice.
After the forecast last night, we stayed in the marina today and gave “Wor Lass” an all-over body wax and polished my wood. She was a bit dirty but is gleaming again, for now.

The rest of the weekend is looking a write-off with the northelies stirring the sea. It could be time to get the beach gear out or chase salmon again if it rains.

Aye kev, more of a day for boating rather than fishing I fear, sounds like yous did ok though ....

chris, coloured pirks all my own fault I'm afraid ... colours match that of ford, and vauxhall :) :) :)

little production line going :) .......

Thats brilliant Norman, i thought you were maybe buying them painted, no runs either, :):). I've got a scratch on my X Trail can you book me in :D:D...

Chris, only if it's green, blue, red or white, else I`ll have to buy another can :) :) :)

On the subject of pirks ...... whats your views (anyone please comment) on the following :-

I rigged the two pirks shown above with the treble on the tail end (Lightest end), my view was that when lifting the pirk we get most strikes and this is when the cod is chasing, so ......... would it be chasing a bait fish Head or Tail ......?

Tail, I would think, as the baitfish would be trying to get away .... hence the way I rigged this pirk.
However, we all, myself included (and the vast amount of trade pirks) rig with the treble at the heaviest end (Maybe for effect on Norweigans) so .....
whats your views ? ... which end the treble ?

Of course this theory was all blown away when I saw this this picture posted by John (snatcher) :) :) :)

KamaKasi Head-first Bait Fish :) :) :)

comments and views more than welcome .......

Looks like you had fun again Norman ,rough but productive ...a bit like myself :D .Hey I was just saying yesterday that I've not been out on Slinky in almost a year ,the wife was shocked .

Aye Norman, Hard going yesterday but good company, and a bit of craic with a few fish as well, couldn't ask for more.

On the subject of Pirks, I find if the hooks are in the lighter end, when you are working the pirk, as it drops back to the sea bed, the lighter end comes up and latches on to the rig body. When i make them ( usually tubular ones ) i find out which end to put the hooks by balancing them to see which way they tip. Just my opinion.:)

Could be a big debate there Norman, when i saw your pics i thought i was rigging the treble at the wrong end. On looking at my mould, which is the same shape as yours, the wire eye at the head end is'nt central is offset, similar to a leadhead, so for my mould you're probably right and the treble should be at the tail end.
I would think if you were jigging with the treble on the tail end, on the way down the weight of the head would overtake the tail ( Like throwing a dart in the air ) and may cause the treble to foul the line on a slow drift, fast drift probably wouldnt be a problem.....What do you think......Either way good debate......:):)

Nice work shop Norman iw ould love the space to have my own lathe and bench drill.

That is what i am doing today, making leads and pirks
