The sl30sh is an ok casting reel as standard. Better once you flush the barings with lighter fluid and give them a drop of red rocket fuel. I use one red block for fishing.
I used to use a 7000c for rough ground work, and I think casts a little further, but the slosh is a better fishing reel imo.
If you do mod/ upgrade your reel let me know how you get on mate!
i have a slosh 30 i want to mate it a better casting reel what things can i buy for it![]()
if u do improve it m8 let us know. was ganna ask u a question, al pm u m8.

This is not meant to be contentious, or directed at anyone in particular, but could I ask what real-world gains are expected from such reel tuning jiggery pokery ?
My own thoughts are that the majority of out-of-the-box reels on the market today are probably capable of far more than their owners/users. I have the same opinion of guns, although I get the whole custom thing - most of my guns have been significantly altered to my own preference.
I just wondered what the expected gains are; some of the modifications seems a little fraught given that you have to permanently remove bits from your reel and then open a hole up with a drill bit or hand file...
Again, this is just out of curiosity (and my apologies if this is a thread hijack) but, for my money, I can't see how drilling/filing a reel and fitting go-faster bits benefits unless you are already operating at that reels upper limits of performance.
Assuming casting is like any other discipline then technique is likely to provide bigger gains to most users than modifications, no ?
I've got a sl30shv there very good casting reels as they have a different set up to the original slosh 30.
with my saltist magged up its put 40\50 yds on my cast it might not be everybody cup of tea drilling holes in reels but am a poor caster and I give it a try with the mag its a gamble I no but it worked for me ever good caster I no iv done somthing with they reelsl (qtc frame)( upgrade bearing)( and maged up)This is not meant to be contentious, or directed at anyone in particular, but could I ask what real-world gains are expected from such reel tuning jiggery pokery ?

I've not used Saltist reels but, for my money, the easiest out-the-box reel I ever used for throwing big casts was an Abu Rocket. I could/can throw further with a Rocket/Blue Elite than I could/can with magged reels.
That's largely down to me, not the kit, and I freely admit it.
IMHO unless you wind the mag throughout the cast to get the best from it (a la tournament casters) then there's not too much in favour of a mag reel to begin with if you set it and forget it; not to me anyway.
This is all very subjective and not much of it is applicable if the fish are feeding in a gully forty yards out...
Whatever works is OK at the end of the day, but distance casting is worlds apart from throwing a big cod bait in a stiff wind IMHO, and a go-faster real could easily introduce problems under fishing conditions.
Just an opinion - your mileage may vary
My apologies again for straying off topic but the rationale underlying this interests me.
