Slosh 30 question

Currently have 2 of the brake blocks in my Slosh. Is it possible to have only one brake block in or would that have an adverse effect on casting?

For the first week I had mine, I didn`t realise that there were no brake blocks fitted in the factory, and I thought that the two blocks in the reel box were spares!!

I unintentionally learned that it`s possible to cast a Slosh 30 with NO blocks in, so I cant see why you can`t cast with just one block.

Someone wiser might know better..........

you can cast with 2 block or 1 block or none, if you are going for 1 block put a drop of thicker oil in the bearings.

so ? if the ones in my box are spare how come i can tighten the brakes up if there not fitted ?,me thinks ill have to have a look inside mine just to check

Bri, you cannot adjust the braking effect once the blocks are fitted. Only way of adjusting the blocks is to remove the end plate (opposite side to the handle) and either cut them down or fit the smaller clear ones that should have come with your reel. Below you will see my reel with the red blocks fitted.

Yu can half one, and put a half on each brake rod, keeping the balance.

checked this afternoon they came already fitted to the 30 but had to put the ones into the 20

youve got me lost stu re not being able to adjust them isnt that the whole point of the little thumb wheel (not the star drag) at the other end to alter the brake resistance whats it ?

Hi Bri,

The thumb wheel you refer to is the spool tensioner. It does increase/decrease the resistance applied to the spool, but has no effect on the brake blocks. For any fixed position of the spool tensioner, the only way to increase/decrease braking is to alter the size of the brake blocks.

Have read through these posts and I,m now more confused than ever.never touched my 30 yet, and after reading this I,m not going to.

You should be careful when using the spool tensioner Bri, as you can overtighten it and distort the spindle and/or damage the bearings. It should be tightened until there is just the slightest amount of side to side movement on the spool and then left. You should then use a combination of the brake blocks and heavy oil on the bearings to slow the spool to suit your casting preferences.

I find 1 red brake block and red rocket fuel about right with 25lb line on the 30, and 1 clear brake block and red rocket fuel with 20lb line on the 20.

ok heres how i do it ,i back the lever off as if im going to cast but allow the weight to fall,if its running a bit too fast i tighten up on the knob until its dropping at a speed i feel i might be ok casting with,then i back it off bit by bit over the course of a few casts until its what id class as perfect for casting then just leave it at that
