Remeber these fish are protected species and should be returned
 
codcatcher at least you have asked, many think when they get a smelt they have caught a record breaking herring. Most of the smelt being caught are coming well up the river Tyne at the moment, shad normally start appearing with the mackerel.

I got a smelt last year from church bank in the Tyne. I didn't know what it was until I seen these photos so cheers Alan for solving this mystry. By the way it had a good set of teeth so beware
 
any one no what it iz ? got it to day at copthone ?

was doing a bit research before pretty intresting.

seems they come up from February to may ish to breed at the rapids at wylam just before the wear where fresh water meets salt. and spend the rest in and around the estuary. scotty musta got one of the first swimming up river to spawn. godda love the tyne eh! such a healthy diversity you never know what your gunna hook.
 
;D parky you can cast and get nice big fish and lots ov fish but have to say am well chuft at having one betta than u hehehe
 
The noise these fish make when their out the water is a tad scary tbh. I remember catching one 2 years ago and just wanting to get in back in. Sounded like it was growling at me...

They stink too... Its like a overpowering cucumber. (How i smell after a day doing salad bar prep for 3 restaurants) :P
