Smiths Dock Tonight 16/10/12

Well despite all the rain water gushing down the Tyne tonight, I just got home in time to get myself some bait for a what I thought would be a small session tonight with a possible 3rd blank coming up though I would give it a go.
Walking down to the old docks it didn't look good, first time I have seen the place with not one fisherman/woman on there(didn't look good) never the less I had bait so use it, set up and just after dark had my first cast, with in 10 minuits bang a very nice cod 1lb 7oz just on size, would have put it back but had trouble getting hook out.
For the next hour and a bit nothing, so I thought I would try soaking my rag in a bit peeler crab oil, within 20 minuits a nice(well for me that is) whiting 1lb 12oz getting bigger, loaded the hook up with the Rag I had left just as low tide approached and there it was my PB turns up with a nice 2lb 3oz Cod, a great end to the night when I had such low hopes.:)

Cheers mate Wish my 2lb 3 would be a 4lb something, you are right though patience is key it will come soon I hope

if you only fish the river will take you a while to get a 4lb cod, try broadening your horizons and head for the beach. Unless you are only able to fish the rivers, at least you can sea fish, I can't anymore, apart from a little session now and again with the grand kids in the Tyne.

Well done on your catch. And like alan said try local beaches etc when seas away gives you a better chance of a decent fish. If our winter is as wet as the summer the tyne wont produce as many good fish as it did last winter and this rain wont help.

Cheers for the advise guys, I have just got some waders for the beach, tried Whitley week before last but no joy, any advise on what tides is best for beach fishing would be great, is a flapper or pulley rig the best, I use't to fish the shingle beaches of Cromer when I was a kid, 30 years on and flat sandy beaches I haven't a clue, any advise would be very much appreciated.

Well done on the fish Dacky.... I saw the water in the river last night and bottled it lol.

Haha, you are right it was very strong going out haven't seen it like that for a while, I used a free run rig and casted up the river and let the tide rip it back past me to pull tight and left until the fish come, I was surprised to catch in that flow.

best thing to do is go down the beach at low tide, over the next couple of days would be great, big tides so you will be able to see where the fish holding holes are. For Whitley you want a bit of a sea running and I always liked to fish two down and two up, although have had catches from high water down. If you have done your homework as suggested move from one shot to another.

Thanks for all the great advise guys, Ian you will not believe if I told you that the two cod come with them beads on, I swear down they are a must have in everyone's box for the winter nights I would say. Will for sure go down to Tynemouth at low tide thank you.

Hi mate do you loose a lot of gear at smiths dock and how do you get to it i thought it was fenced off , well done on the catch mate.

Hi mate I have replied to your royal quays post, can lose gear on the turn of the tide, however there is alot of gear out there to be dragged in lol, regularly happens to me, and on 2 occasions have pulled my gear back in from the week before. But they are good spots in the winter
