Morecambe bay and Blackpool have been full of these for the last few years. Best beach mark probably Rossal /Cleveleys area in Blackpool, evening tides in June/July fishing with crab..peelers/softbacks or even hard backs. Suggest you look at the AnglingAddicts web site for an update. Charter boat is Blue Mink based at Fleetwood..he knows all the marks.

Another four or five months I'd say even if the weather does behave.
Used to love my Smut fishing when I lived on the south coast (didn't love the weed though). Think I'll be heading over Fylde coast way this summer for a few evening sessions, seems a bit more reliable than the Holderness from what I've read. I'll probably make a pilgrimmage to Selsey in Sussex for a weekend in early July as well, worth it for the chance of a 20lb plus fish plus a spot of Bream fishing during the day.
For the OP don't believe the myths about must have baits for hounds; yes, crab is probably best but they are a big shoal fish and when they hit the beach they will eat whatever is in front of them. I've probably had as many Smuts on ragworm as I have on crab (including my pb of a smidge under 11lb):
Always remember to loosen off your drag and never stray too far from your rod, a 7lb Smut will have your rod out of the rest in no time and a double will have it in the sea and away before you can blink...

Bit bigger than the tommys I was catching tonight haha, thanks for the info chaps it looks like a weekend away somewhere preferably with a pub near by in the summer

There all over now apparently in big numbers silloth area
At one time people saw 1-2 max.
Now they reckon there getting 20-30
Used to see big ones caught at west tarbet, even been looking at buying a sea kayak for getting out to the sand bars at tarbet I know of huge tope up there,
I'd bet they'll show up eventually around the Northumberland sandy beeches there's doggies there, & there's plenty of food for them to hunt on

Give it a few more years and they will be on the colliery beaches as well. The odd one has come off Seaham pier on recent summers (just tiddlers mind) so they are definitely spreading further north. As long as we don't get the spider crab as well I'll be very happy

dunvegen isle of sky i no its a bit far but you will up there last year smooth hound. up to 9pound i no that's not the big but a lot more fishing then that up there spur dogs up to 10 pound not one or two i had 15 in a 4 hour secession. poilock up 5pound again not one or two. lots best late June or July

Caught them in Luce Bay from a boat but never tried for them off the shore there yet. I know that plenty are caught off the shore on the Luce Bay marks.
I reckon about 95% off my shore fishing around the Mull of Galloway area is lure fishing for bass. Am thinking about trying for smoothounds this summer over there though. Will probably use the carp rod that I use for bass fishing. I will be trying at night so distance casting should not be required.
We should be opening our Clashwhannon static caravan/Drummore towards the end of March. So looking forward to going back over again.

Your Aussie mates would call them "Gummy sharks" wouldn,t they Snatcher?.
And they eat them as "Flake".
The only trouble when targeting them anywhere in the Solway is the dredded LSD,s.
