So I have gotten a little into freshwater coarse fishing the past month or so. Had a fair few sessions on local ponds...
I have done really well with countless roach, rudd and some sort of bream/roach hybrids also few gudgeons and perch thrown in. This has been topped up by a few bigger fish from these ponds with a 4.5lb tench, 5lb chub and +20lb mirror carp :D So very happy. But this has been topped by the session this bank holiday weekend...

This weekend i went to a place in north yorkshire (near horrogate, cant remember what its called). But over the 24hour session had 10 carp between 4lb and 11lb, but 1st cast my reel had a wierd set of small steady runs. So i stuck in to a tough fish which had me around the pond for about 15mins as i have only been useing 6lb hooklengths, about 5 yards a very large mass hit the surface... A catfish, a few more minutes to get it in a good netting postiting, got it succesfully netted :)
Wieghed 27lbs. A month into my freshwater fishing, is this a fish of a life time?

I have to say i will be only be getting the coarse gear out every few weeks when i fancy it when the summer sea fishing is in full swing, and wont go in winter. I'm still a sea angler at heart... just dont want to spend 10a a session and catch a flatty and scrawny whiting so went for the sport fishing side, spend a 5a on maggots and bits and bobs and have a couple of sessions catching great fish on light gear.

The best fights where probs a 4.5lbtench and 5lbchub caught on consecutive casts, single maggot on 1lb line tied to 20 hook on a waggler, took a long time to tire both out suitable for netting haha! Real good fun!

I'll find out from the lad who i went with for you mate. I didnt know if that was a good session or not... Like it was ok in my opinion but seemed quiet at times, but that might just be because my expectations were too high? I still enjoyed it. Need to get myself some bite alarms as it makes it a bit easier to spot the smaller pick ups and stuff. One step at a time eh.

haha sorry trev, i'll be back catching them thornback rays soon mate! its just to get out, enjoy the weather and catch something. I like the sport, catching a near 30lb fish on 6lb line is probs the most dramatic thing i've ever done! haha just brilliant!

Excellent stuff Ryan buddy, was looking forward to the pic ever since you sent me that exciting txt saying you caught a decent wells catfish.

Well done buddy

cracking stuff ryan mate ,was it not woodlands ?

nah, it was just a little way past their cos it was pointed out to me on route down, a couple blokes i got talking to while fishing recon the woodland have lost alot from a couple of winters ago, you know the big freeze but i do fancy a run down their for a bit carping if anyone has any info?

ryan i have not been to woodlands for about 3 years but it doesnt fish as well as the place you went ,plenty of carp about 5-9 pound when us used to go but biggest was only 14 pound which you have beaten already

only place i know of down that area with catfish is Grafton Mere and they have some good cats in there saying that 27lb is a bloody good fish for anywhere ...
