its laughable, ok they collared the guy and fined him, and banned him from the fishing grounds - for 5 days, 5 fecking days!

what is the point?? just shows how laughably pointless the whole fisheries policy is. We'll be forking out for a licence, and this will still be happening

and if one foreign skipper is doing it betcha there's more

As an angler, lets say I was found in the local river, without a licence taking undersized fish, I'd probably get fined a similar amount, but more importantly have my tackle confiscated, they give the gut his boat back and tell him don't be naughty for 5 days!

Lt Cdr Rex Cox, the commanding officer of HMS Severn, said: "This is an excellent result that means my grandchildren will grow up being able to know the taste of fish from the North Sea."

well to be blunt thats a load of bollocks, perhaps if they put one across the bows the chase would have ended there and then, better one through the wheelhouse though, so they got fines and the nets taken from them, and the govenment and navy are busy slapping backs saying "jolly good show what"

this blatent kick in the nuts for all sea anglers is what david miliband needs to take note of when he wonders why the majority of sea anglers say shove your licience and marine bill where the sun dont shine, oh they also had the fish taken from them-to do what, the fish are dead, they are no more, perhaps a nice new £50 fine for each and every fish they had in the holds as well, untill this roll over for our belly to be tickled, sad sacks govenment start acting tough then these foriegn bast**ds will keep taking the urine, that was one out of god knows how many other similar cases the navy have missed, while we give these slap on the wrists the thieves will still come and take, smash a few teeth out and send them home limping and they wont be as eager to come back, to be blunt miliband get involved, dont let these wig wearing judges set the paltry fines, make it a minimum fine that near bankrupts the offenders, as has been posted if i was caught freshwater fishing in say close season and without a licience i would have a fine that would near bankrupt me and ALL my tackle would be taken as well, my attitude now i have read this is - you want money from me to sea fish, note the upturned finger - swivel on it

under the criminal law assets can be seized if found guilty of certain CRIMINAL OFFENCES ,is this not criminal ??.as treeboa said the freshwater lads can have their gear taken off them ,i beleive this to be a bigger sin than . a lad fishing for a few roach etc which he puts back alive anyway.Making an example of one of these tw$ts ie confiscate the lot and a huge monetary fine plus some type of ASBO/ banning order might prevent a re- occurence.only my views but as usual the government implement laws which are never enforced to the full!!

I feel your pain - shocking story but in no way unique or unusual

as for the quote from Lt. Col. Admiral Birdseye :calim: unbelievable.

Commit a multi million pound fraud and the SFO say it's to complicated to try the case, the jury won't understand.

A pitiful junkie gets caught nicking £40 worth of clobber from Primark to fend off withdrawal again and gets locked up.

Sums this present government up mate..........Absolutely spineless!!! Their attitude is without doubt "Let's steer clear of any international confrontation (Iraq with it's oil excepted and confront the average law abiding citizen". - much easier)

Don't honestly think much will change however even now the "bloke without a backbone" has anounced his retirement.

By the way I am not politically mided in the slightest: it's just I can totally see where your coming from mate

Anyway..Best wishes

As it was a royal mavy boat that chased him it would suggest this was an offence between the 6 and 12 mile limit.

The marine bill proposed maximum fines of up to ten times the current maximum to bring it in line with inflation . There is also stuff in there to enable faster processing etc. They are also proposing that the sfc patrol officers get the same powers as the navy fisheries officers.

The fines and punishment are laughable and hardly a deterent. But I think it would be the CFP rules that were broken in this case rather than the issues addressed by the marine bill. I may be wrong though.

Its this increase in fines and powers for fisheries officers which is good news for anglers in the marine bill as it may make commercials think twice about breaking the rules in future.

Another point to note is if someone holds up a bank it does not make the papers...why because they are caught regularly and low news value...but its so rare anyone gets caught breaking fisheries rules it makes national BBC headlines.:(

I have details of all prosecutions for the N shields to berwick region brought during the period of Jan To March this year from the last NSFC meeting if anyone is intrested. Also the number of days at sea and their actions over that period. It may be intresting to know exactly what the patrol vessel in that region is doing in terms of protecting our sport.

Cheers

Willie Mackenzie, a campaigner on the ship, said: "The fishing industry and politicians have ignored the scientists and continued to batter cod stocks.

"We're in the North Sea to save the cod from extinction.

"We've had to take action today to stop cod being caught because otherwise it will disappear from the seas and our dinner plates."

and all the govenment will do is bandie this white paper around, however it will come too late as they wont actually do anything untill its actually not worth fishing the north sea, , by then the lilly livered mp`s wont be upsetting anyone by saying dont fish here, i was thinking the other night ( unusual i know) many many years back i remember my mum saying its sorry fish and chips tonight, your dad dont get paid till tommorow and money is strapped, now its your dads been paid, we can afford fish n chips

According to the 'Sun' newspaper today, a report by scientists states that if nothing is done about commercial fishing and rogue trawlers, dolphins will be extinct around our shorelines within 5 years. SIghtings have reduced dramatically over the past few years.

the whole policy is bonkers. As another example there's a currently a boat from grimsby, the Appollo, an ultra efficient massive longliner, which is raping the sound of mull, loch etive and loch sunart. these are probably some of the most important locations in britain for spurdogs to pup, and at this time of year these slow growing and slow maturing fish are seeking out these areas to breed.

there's no quotas on spurdogs so the appollo is basically wiping out and entire generation of these fish, perfectly legally according to the rules. obviously theres a by catch of anything that feeds on the bottom, so by the time I get up there next month there'll not be much left for me or anyone else for that matter. To the skipper it doesn't matter that in a couple of years there'll be virtual no spurs left at all, right now he can make a pot of cash

when they've all gone what next, well whats left?? It'll be the Pollock, give it 2 or 3 years and they'll be slaughtering the pollock population around scotland so whilst at the moment the sport is good, its going to go the way of everything else, at which point there'll be virtually nothing left

proves the point, when the more popular fish become harder to catch they will target others, have you noticed that most fish fingers now contain `white fish` not cod, youngs now supply pollock, years ago few people would willingly take that over cod

Conservational minded anglers are fighting the government to get some protection for the limited numbers of spurdog left along with the tope and skate are they are just as much an endangered species due to thier slow reproduction and growth rate. see www.save-our-sharks.org for more details

Something to point out here is that every supermarket has it within thier trading policy to not sell product that is not harvested sustainably. So if you see skate or spurdog for sale in your local supermarket you would be totally within your rights to bring the fact that these two species are being fished on a totally unsustainable basis.

ICES have been warning that the current level of cod fishing is unsustainable for several years but despite these warnings the people setting the catch limits for commercials have taken no notice. This is most likely because the people setting those limits are predominantly only intrested in how much the commercials can catch. This is one of the major benifits of the proposals in the marine bill white paper in that anglers are being finally recognised as actually being worth more to the uk economy than commercial fishermen and so will be allowed to have a say in setting catch quota's in the future.

Not wanting to be alarmist but I read a report in sept last year saying that if things dont change the north sea would not contain any fish species in any sufficient numbers to actually allow them to sustain their own numbers within 47 years. I dont know where they comeup with that number but thats basically what it said in anglers terms ...food for thought there.

Over fishing.

Over fishing.

I find it all very disheartening.
I returned to sea fishing last year and did not know what to expect.
I have been very disappointed by the fishing i have seen.
I have seen guys using the best bait in the world. Juicy black runny, big peeler you name it. Conditions have been perfect. Northely winds and a lovely swell. And nothing exept the odd whitey to show.
I have seen only about three decent cod caught last season:casstet:

I have now had a go at fly fishing and it makes a nice change going home with a bag of nice rainbows.

This fishing is based on a restocking policy. There is a chart in the wiegh room at Derwent - What goes in and what goes out. Simple and effective.A limit of 8 fish per person more than enough for anybody.

The same also applys to other stocked fishing areas such as Waskerly however these have smaller take home quotas such as two fish. Catch and release great fun and sport.

Mark,

It is very disheartening but hopefully things are changing for the better. the marine white paper is potentially the best thing that could happen for recreational sea anglers, yes there are downsides in the proposal to introduce a license but if we stick together and ensure that we see improvements first it could be the start of a major turn around in fishing in this region.

There is not just anglers who are not happy with the current situation there are many other groups who are also concerned about the management of our seas. I am about to start another thread on exactly this subject which may be worth a read.

Cheers
Dave.
