Soft Plastic Lure Making

apologies as i have a curious mind. when u melt down old lures? does it
a: not release any gas/substance thats harmful to u ?
b. lose its biodegradeabilty?
c. rebond in a different manner and lose original motion etc?>
d. when u make them xlayers can u still put a glass rattle in ?

i know ur an engineer si , so i am assuming ur keeping urself safe etc. but i am just curious as usual . :)

No problem really good questions.

It really depends on the type of Plastic / media used. There are non-toxic solutions available such as mixing Glycerol and Gelatin to achieve a non-toxic biodegradable alternative. Unfortunately a lot of the SP's on the market contain environmentally harmful products which can be hazardous to health with long term exposure to their byproducts when heating.

Unless its non-toxic then yes the melting process will give off harmful fumes to which you should wear a face mask or respirator when heating, mixing or pouring.

I would imagine that re-used Plastic degrades as its continually reheated and recycled but can't state for sure. I need to compare this for myself to understand the difference in quality.

For the X-layers it is possible to make allowance for the glass rattle which is part of my next experiment.

;)

Found some cheap glass rattles on agm last week. They come with 1 sharp end for inserting into complete SPs, but I suppose you could always drop one in mid-pour.

Had my first real pours in anger today. Learnt a lot in the 2 hours I spent doing it. 1st lesson is not not overfill the cavities and take your time. I need to be more patient but im pleased with initial results. First time using mixing dye and glitter too.

Cheers Nat. Minnows, Shads, x-layers, do-lives and baby slug-go's are about 4 inches and there's some larger 6 inch Slug-go's. Going to invest in some more dyes and glitter soon to get some multi coloured ones on the go. Hopefully the quality will improve each time. Just want to catch something on them now!

Look really good mate.. Have you tried them in a pool (the bath) yet to see what they act/look like? :)

No mate not yet, they'll be straight in at the deep end, literally! Pretty much know what to expect from them as I used the patterns before. Just hope they catch cos I've got a feeling ill have hundreds by the summer lol

Right, thankfully I've used up my existing supply of plastic otherwise I'd be going on forever! Last few pours and my homemade collection for now...

Excellent stuff Norm, I've still got some learning to do before I catch up with you though! It is strangely addictive I have to admit.... I think I'm going to have to find myself a plastic dealer lol
