Hi everybody. Im an international student from Brunei and am currently studying Newcastle. I was wondering if i needed a license to fish in the UK. I was in the US before i transferred to Newcastle and you need a license there.

Anyway, i'm really into fishing but i have no idea(thank god i found this forum) where to start here in the UK. Can you guys give me some info on nearby places where i can fish around Newcastle? I know about Cullercoats and Tynemouth but i've not been there yet. What kind of rods do you use over there? Surf rods?

I need to meet up with someone one soon to show me how its done here. So if anyone from Newcastle might be going some time, give me a shout. thanks!

Regards,
Jerry

from the shore jerry its a beach rod/shore rod 12 foot minimum fixed spool reel or muliplyer
15 to 18 lb main line and 60lb+ shock leader for casting
basic running ledger rig will get you fishing with a 6 oz lead
the more you get into it the more you will need better rigs
as for fishing newcastle way i only know the river tyne never fished the coast line but im sure there will be more to post on locations

you dont need a liecence to fish the sea
yet!!!!?????

Welcome to NESA and welcome to Newcastle Jerry. You'll get loads of useful help and advice here but the fishing may not match up to what you're used to in America.

The tackle required will depend on the ground you're fishing but most winter sport is chasing cod from the shore and it's not too difficult. More important is being on the right mark at the right time but dont go alone if it's your first time cos we have quite a few cut off points and the North sea can be unkind at the best of times.

Best is to post when you have some spare time and tag along with some of the lads

Good luck

Hi Jerry and welcome to NESA. Unfortunately I am unable to fish at the moment or you would have been more than welcome to join us for a session sometime. I am sure someone on here will get back to you soon though.

Jim.

will do. as soon as i get myself a beach gear, i will let you guys know. Thanks. about fishing in the states, i was in Kentucky and that's way away from the coastline so all we had were 2 big lakes good for largemouth and smallmouth bass, bluegill, crappie, catfish and such. it gets boring though...most of the time you either get cats or bluegills by baiting and the basses using lures. there's not much variety. Brunei though is awesome especially you're on a boat, you can get groupers and amberjacks up to the high 20kg range and good size mackerels up to 8kgs and ofcourse the multitude of reef fish species. As for shore fishing, you might get rays if you're lucky or even mangrove jacks and some pretty big barramundis.
