Well was in the garage last night sorting my gear out as the nights are just starting to cut in, new tip light bit on the end of the kompressor ss canny job made of it, anyway thought if them two Cree head lights that I bought last winter from hong kong would still work, I did remove the batteries and give them a good clean before I hung them up for the summer any way put in 3 aaa batteries and low and behold still powerful as ever, also done a load of rigs, sorted my reels out etc so really looking forward to a few good evening sessions soon, best of luck lads

after conditions of last winter it makes one wonder is it worth it, plenty of people complaining of lack of fish and conditions were perfect.

Apart from one trip to the Dirty Wall at Aldebrough in Suffolk I've caught more size cod in the last two months since moving home than I have in the last 20 years living in exile on the south coast.

The nights are drawing in, the seas are getting up and the tackle shops are stocking fresh lugworm again. I haven't been this excited about an upcoming winter season since I was a slip of an 18 year old way back when the bitch Thatch was pm and Denis Smith was manager of The Lads :D

catching the right tide has been the secret the last couple of seasons to catching the cod leave it one tide and gone the next.
obviosly have the time to get down when conditions are right plays a big part.
plus been able to get fresh bait at right time.

myself i would like to see ome n/westerly winds sept oct always brings a bit movement on too much wind and it gets too big. preferably my favourite conditions some moderate s/easterly seas great on the beaches. then turn of the year some n/westerleys again but dont want prolonged period of rough weather like last winter and def no snow.

if you want cod and more cod south shilds pier imho is the best mark in the north east cod all year round off there.

seen some good bags off there whit week fishing south east corner fresh crab ebb tide long trace big hooks and big baits to put smaller stuff off its just a long hike but there are other shots on there and weekends can get crowded,

the beaches you will remember off yrs ago blast etc are no were near as good as they were due to pits closing but other species turn up at times so in some aspects you could say are they still ok it depends.

I used to love fishing the Blast John, parking up in the pit yard, a nod to the security lad then walking through the yard and down the shale slope onto the beach and the trek down to Frenchies. Back then Noses Point was a good 30 yards away from the water even at high tide, there was a beach in front of the Green Wall and in a big sea the Chems Heap was the place to fish.

Lots has changed since then but I've fished Horden a few times and had good success, whilst I agree Shields is a cracking mark I much prefer being on the beach and think Horden and maybe north of the Tyne at Lynemouth etc may be seeing plenty of me over the next few months as winter draws in

beauty of the pit yard was you were able to wash yourself down with the hoses they washed the wagons down with you will remember that.

had fish to 12lb off lynburn beach just north of lynmouth ie north side of pipe.

i like north of pipe on flood tide /also i like south side about the middle on an ebb tide in a south easterly sea.

these beaches imho are not a patch on what they were they have shallowed out a lot ,rather stay localish now.

Me rods and reels were cleaned but forgot to clean me rucksack/ waterproofs etc...... well never cleaned them for a couple of years but they smell good to me :-D Nowt better than hoying on a stinky bait/fish smelling smock :-D.
