The gare is a funny one, deep water should fish better than it does but doesn't seem to do the business as well as it should. There is a lot less tide from the blocks since the barrage was built and alot more seals in summer. Used to be a good shot for red cod in the summer. I remember my father used to fish from the top in massive sea in the 80's when everywhere else was unfishable. Water coming spreying over the top where the lighthouse is. Your also unable to now to fish there or as mentioned go through the steps on the riverside. It still has its day now and again and there is some really good whiting taken off the redcar corner after dark. Last time i fished it last oct, I had 2 whiting a cast after dark and mostly sized and some really good ones. Is a place that can through anything up though, have had more different species on there over the years than anywhere else in the North East.
As mentioned it isnt a place to fish if its rough especially at high tide, swells seem to to engulf it more than they used to in my experience. Quite a few anglers have been washed off and killed over the last 10 years.
