Arrived back from camping in Silloth this morning, had a fab weekend with family and friends but the fishing was tragic. The Solway was really choppy and extremely coloured (not unusual) and there was a cross wind and rain which really put a damper on things. I decided after talking to some locals that 'it's just not happening this time' and didn't bother!
So arriving home and not having made a sacrifice to the fishing demon, I checked the weather and surf forecas,t grabbed my lures and headed off down the Leas. Got there at 4pm, 2hrs before HW. After a quick scout about, I thought that Johnsons would be the best option.
The Sea was relatively flat, with a very slight swell, there was a light offshore breeze and it was slightly overcast, almost perfect plugging conditions. The water had a little colour in it but not too much to spoil it.
Clipped on 'Old reliable' a.k.a Zenith and after a few chucks nothing was showing any interest. So I switched again to the Patchinko. A few casts later and 'smash' the lure was hit on the surface. After a visual acrobatic display with the Mackeral leaping out of the water, I landed a decent fish not massive though.
After dwindling interest and losing another on the surface I changed Lures to a Duo Narabone, iv had fish on this one before so I know it does the job. A few casts later there were Launce and another Mackeral. Switched colours and depth on the lure and again another Mackeral ( soz no pics of the fish, but when you've seen one mackie you've seen them all!)
With the fish bieng around I changed back to the Zenith to get a bit more distance. After a few more chucks I had a big take.
I knew straight away I had a decent fish on. I immediately thought to myself 'take your time Si' It was too big to reel straight in as it was stripping line off. After a few minutes patiently bringing the fish in, it was almost at my feet. It was making sustained, deep long runs and changing direction but not thrashing about like a Mackeral. I was just about to raise it to the surface, but showed it a little too much respect and didn't keep the pressure on. It came off before it broke the surface, didn't even get a glimpse of what it might have been. Gutted!
Anyway, not a bad little session for a Monday Summer evening! It was only spoilt by one thing and that was the state of the place! Don't want to get into a rant so, 'if it's biodegradable / organic and environmentally friendly' like used or dead bait, legs / shells etc then: PUT IT IN THE WATER! If it's not the aforementioned then 'TAKE IT AWAY YOU!'......Simple!
