South Shields & District SAC - Monthly Comp - 8th Sept 2013

im not a member of your club but was on the pier and heard what the pier watchman said to those fishing.

he initially came along telling anglers that the gate would be locked at ... 5.30.

the lads all told him there match was on till 6. he explained that they were short staffed and his shift finished at 6.

before 5.30 he came along letting people know that he was closing the gate.

after chatting to the few lads still there fishing the match he said he,d open it [at/till] ? 6 for them

Shields Club

Shields Club

Sounds like an interesting situation. Closed/ Open gates on the Pier? Remind anyone of anything recently?

If what is above is true, and certain members of the club walked past other members without explaining the situation (knowing they would be disqualified), that is the lowest of the low.

Just FYI, the original constitution (set during the formation of the club in 1938) includes the following passage:

The objects of the Club are:
a) To promote the sport of Angling and to provide opportunities for social contact, friendship and mutual support.
b) To develop and maintain an interest in the sport amongst young people by the provision of educational, recreational, and leisure opportunities.
c) To promote competition, team spirit, social inclusion and intergenerational activity.
d) To encourage the health well-being and personal development of members, by the promotion of competition, team spirit, social inclusion and intergenerational activity through the sport of Angling.

If this is the case, those who knowingly left the pier should be banned based on the above! What is the club coming to these days if gamesmanship has now become a standard weapon in the members' armoury.

Lets just hope this is just a one-off, and the club continues to run as well as in the previous 75 years.

all shields members were told pier was shutting at 5.30 as short staffed. pier man was then told we have a match till 6pm he then said he woul keep it OPEN till 6, that meant anglers would have to leave before 6, some members did and some did not , so that means (depending where you were fishing )you would have to leave pier at least 5.45 to reach gate for 6pm and some did not... so make your own minds up who is right and who is wrong,
and the club ruling is , once gates have been shut pier is out of bounds

but this should not have been dicussed on open forum, it should have all been done at a meeting

Thanks for the explanation Bob,

Obviously I was not aware of the exact nature of the incident. I was simply commenting on what was said above. I suppose this is another difficult situation, which, I agree, should have been sorted out on the day, and not brought into an open forum.

However, I do agree that members who climbed round the gate should have been disqualified (provided EVERYONE was indeed told), BUT, it seems from the above that no one did climb round?

To quote 'Bigandy' above "I walked through an open gate. To be told it was closed!!" Surely people weren't disqualified for walking through a physically open gate, but because it was after 6pm , it was deemed 'closed'???????

I am looking forward to fishing the shields club winter leagues again this year, but will make sure I stay off the pier I think!! ;)

I wish to give an explanation of sundays match issue as people seam to be speculating, I Fished the match and can give a personal account.i am not criticising anybody and do not wish to debate this matter further. The security guy told me he would keep the gate open until all members where of the pier as, he knew the match was until 6, this was at 5.10. I know this as i asked him the time. this is what happened as far as i am concerned.Nobody told me the gate would be closed at 5.30 or that I had to be of at 6. So not all members were told they had to be of as stated in a previous post. The security guy said he would wait for the members to leave but would stop anybody else from walking through the gate. Maybe this is why the gate had been closed as Billy said it had been. No time limit was ever mentioned to me. The members were spread along the full length of the pier, at no point was everybody together to be given the time information as stated previously.
I walked of the pier at approximately 5.45. After speaking to a few lads, I walked through an open gate, not a gate which was opened to let me off, i arrived at the club hut approximately 6.05. I was told I could not weigh in. I was disqualified. I never witnessed the gate being closed, I am certainly not going to accept that all members knew they had to be off the Pier or that they were attempting to bend the rules in any way. Maybe if the security guy had not been good enough to offer to keep the gate open this situation may not have occurred.
of course I am not blaming the security.

This statement is incorrect

Reading between the lines and sitting on the fence ( pardon the pun ). Surely anglers walking through an open gate and not climbing round the fence should be allowed to weigh in, wether they walked off at 5:45. 6:00 or even 6:15. The gate was open when they went off the pier, the security guard had it closed to stop further patrons from entering the pier, not to signal that those left on the pier should be disqualified.
Just my unbiased opinion.

This statement is incorrect

I reiterate the pier man told us he was closing gate at 5.30pm and we said had a match till 6pm and then said he would close the gate at 6pm that is what pier man told us fishing the end and club ruling is once gate is closed it is out of bounds past the gate ,i know not pier man said to you, all i know is you were not on end when pier man told us so how can you say i,m incorrect , so enlighten me what is incorrect
