Hi, my son (6 years old) is chomping at the bit to go for his second fishing session, as roker is closed we are heading towards SSP tomorrow, I was wondering if anyone could point us towards a patch where we wont lose too much gear and the chance of him catching something to keep him keen :)

all info greatly received

thanks

Try the walkway should be plenty fish there too keep him keen, its also a very safe place too fish

Walkway rather than Shields for definite as Alan says.

Put Harbour View, South Shields in to Google Maps (satelite view) and you will see a promenade along the river. Fish anywhere on the top half. Very safe fishing for a bairn, bait a spinning rod up with rag / mackerel and plonk it over the side / up to 20 yards out and he should get plenty of Coalies, Bullheads and maybe the odd Flounder and Eel.

Better bet then the pier with a little one, very safe just park up next to the yacht club and walk round.

First part of the pier isn't very snaggy you could try the Hole in the Wall area. Or if you don't mind the river Brighams (Spirit of Shields) is a good shot no snags at all and usually a few fish about.
