just been told the police have went along south shields pier and took all the names and addresses of people fishing
they might be getting fined

because the gates were shut

just heard that someone phoned the police to say there were 12 people on the end of the pier fearing for thier lives
hence the helicopter and coastguard
then the police escorted them off

Well thats fair enough! I didnt even know that south shields pier had gates.
Hopefully it will be a big fine, especially with what happened at tynemouth recently!

Coming back home from the town yesterday afternoon, we stopped off at the seafront car park on Sea Road to take a look at the sea............. :o :o :o it was MASSIVE!
Watched for a while as the waves were crashing over Shields pier and I said to my wife.....\"I hope there\'s nobody trying to fish off there today\"

Hope the police had their waterproofs on !

Aye the harbour would be pretty calm, Rod.
Was there not a problem with weed, though?
I find the little beach doesn\'t \'alf weed up when there\'s a big sea on.

I was down at whitby on sunday and the sea had a bit of a swell but not to bad. One or two of the boats there were out just about half a mile.

Dappa,
good way to get us all banned from piers etc. then how would we encourage the kids to take up the sport?

Also cost of police etc. operation could be used as yet another reason for a licence.

May well "look good" defying the police etc. but pointless if you drown, or worse still get us banned from using the pier

Yer I must agree with Kev

We as anglers have got away with alot on Shields pier over the years, I mean I remember being aloud to walk/fish on the pier when half of it was washed into the sea and there was a crain working away a few feet from your rods.

The Port of Tyne lads have been good to us over the years, only kicking off the young kids when the gates close but I remember a time not that long ago when they stood and waited until you packed up and if you never, rang the police for trespassing.

Bottom line is we lose enough good marks in the area and the Shields council have been trying to stop anglers for a while now fishing the pier because of how dirty we are (summer time for visitors)

I just hope they don’t start taking names for being on the pier when the gates are closed every day as they open at 8.30am and close 8.30pm in the summer and in the winter its way sooner they close.
