I apply a lashing of gentlemans hockle to mine on assembly , its free and comes in many colours .
This is the only "coating" I apply and I do it every time I fish.....so about 10 times a year.
One of the rods I use has seen a lot of wear and "leans" forward, when at rest, like a heron, ready to pillage my pool. I look on it as being a bit closer to the codling crouch lol.
