Spittal Beach - 21/03/14

Been out a few times recently flatty bashing on Spittal beach. For those of you that are not familiar (a few I would imagine ) it is, in my humble opinion,one of the best beaches for flatties. There is a tidal gully no more than a flick out that runs 2/3 of the length of the beach and at either mouth of it seldom fails to produce very decent size flounder. Starts to fill at about half tide on the flow.

Anyway popped out this afternoon 16.45ish (full tide being 17.25) fished the Southern entrance to this gully. Was at a range of 12-15m into about 4ft ish of water sea more or less flat. Got a knock and I could feel it kicking. Not a flatty I am thinking to myself as im winding it in, what is it?!? Sea trout of about 12-14 inch in length!

Don't know if this is a rare occurrence but certainly a first for me! Sorry lads no photo as I was too busy trying to get it back in the water in as good nick as possible. I was covered in scales but hopefully it will live to fight another day. I was over the moonc!

3 hook flapper with size 1 hooks baited with bluey. Thinking it must have been the silver of the skin that got the bite.

had that happen before, once in the river wear and once on cambois beach.
when i was in newbiggin club i fished druridge bay one day and the bloke i was fishing beside caught a salmon about 7 lb! that was just a few yards out as well.

nice one mate, I used to fish spittal but further up river just before the lifeboat station, mid river at low tide produces dustbin lids (fresh peeler is the bait to use), one day a few year ago a youngin reeled in a seatroot. he said to me will I be able to keep this and my answer was ...

gordon were exactly,is it near that cement place,or possibly opposite the shell fish place.ill give the area a try next time up,witch shouldent be long ? would emagine these flatties are edible?cheers.

just up the estuary mate, only couple hundred yrds from the actual river entrance, easy fishin as it's smooootth ground, there's even a little car park just back of where you can fish on the sand bank but make sure yev got wheel locking nuts on or it'll be getting the train back

reg m8, the cement plant is more Belford area, a may be wrong, it's been about 20 year since a was there....!

davey theres a place in river were they acually berth ships at cement works,should know used to buy some cheep ? off the crew.as for the belford location,had static carivan up there for 6 years +touring c/v at berwick location 10years i know area VERY WELL,ps,you trying to get ME rong.

It will probably have been a Kelt thats come out of the Tweed after spawning.Did it look skinny like the one here.

Quite a few are caught this time of year in the estuaries and beaches around them.

You know something bushwhacker, I am not sure. It was pretty slim. Been looking at this after following your link:

Pretty hard to tell when it jumps off the hook, covered in sand and you are trying to get it back in Got to love this game, you never quite know what is going to turn up on that hook!

This fish had fight in it when it was hooked, are kelts not normally knackered by the time they hit the sea?

Reg I think you mean next to the life boat house? The cement works is long gone mate but the wooden jetty is still there. You can catch decent size flounder all along that side. Not sure about the eating though.

Reason I choose to fish the beach most the time rather than the estuary is the poodlers, crabs and small flatties will strip your bait in minutes. You can feel them at your bait as soon as it hits the deck plucking at it. Depending on what you are after this is pretty annoying. I do sometimes fish it with my son using his little rod (he is 3) and we do what I call 'small game fishing' with tiny hooks. At certain times of the year you can be pulling fish out every 2 min which is good sport for a little one
