Spring Run

Just been looking through all the catch results and Great reports guys, but what's everyone's thoughts about the fish currently been caught. What makes me ask this question is I see a lot of lads on the shore are too getting results, so do you think this is possibly the spring run which used to happen each year but sort of disappeared but is now back with new stocks?

Yeah Sean, definately "The Spring Run" which always co-incided with Easter but seems a little late this year.
Best quality fish of the year by many accounts, we discussed yesterday whilst filleting that as ever the Spring Run fish are fast and hard fighting to take then when filleting you find they are the cleanest of fish all year. no lumps bumps infestations or the likes, just good clean fillets.
Although not the correct tecnical term they are "Sweet" to the taste, sweet meaning solid flakes and tasteful.

Maybe, i was out today after a fruitless day fishing the wrecks at the weekend and had a steady dtream of fresh run codling, all between 1lb and 3lb, clean fish and fight like hell, had 26 today in 4hrs and only 2 looked like "rock cod" ie dark and scared.

Be nice to think the spring run returned and they made it 12 months so they could spawn, just about all the fish being landed of late will not have spawned and being kept.

I am no expert with this but listening to the more experienced anglers didn't the spring run coincide with the start of the crabs peeling? So I suppose the question is have the crabs started peeling yet?

I noticed one catch report where the fish were caught on crab

I was using fresh crab back in Feb-March and it was taking fish then, but yeah i think as the water warms and the sea life starts to reproduce the fish come inshore to take advantage and thats the spring run...:)

Like the other lads say, the fish we caught last night were fresh run in prime condition and put up a good fight on the lighter gear...:)

Yes, the small codlings are fighting fit, and the last two cod of 4lb and five pound fought well, but the 4lb and 5lb were thin and the flesh was in very poor condition, and I can only put that down to spawning.
