First session of 2013 Cod hunt. Decided on fishing peg 40 south side and my first cast resulted in what i can only describe as a segul hitting my line...Rod nearly went in over the wall. I managed to catch it spill my coffee and sye. I was mistaken it was a fish and a big one at that, Hardest fighting sea fish ive ever hooked. 10 or so meters from been able to see the biggest fish ive ever caught on a beach caster and......SNAG!!!!! Unbelivable i could of cried. The rest of the session went in hope of catching maybe its cousin but it never came. A very exciting blank sesion i must say.

Big Bass would be my guess ! Feel sorry for your big fish loss ... but at least you had the sport and excitment The snags are the reason I hate fishing SSP anywhere past the first gate. I fished 42 mark a few weeks ago and lost 2 rigs in the first three casts, the one rig I got back I only just got back ! I was casting about 90 yards to avoid the rocks but no good, tackle graveyard !

Its awful this time of year with all the summer gear strewn around on the rocks. After last year I have made a point of always using a rotten bottom at SSP. Lose plenty of leads but no rigs any more.

Rotton bottom all the way now, It had to be the weight that was snagged up! Big bass if it were it had to be a record breaker because this was massive

it all.depends on the tide if its comming in small wall probs best on the end stay clear of the end on a big tide comming in it just sweeps you into snags best to fish 45 area until tide eases off wen its going out s/e corner probs best on a big tide if not so strong fish into shipping chanel of the round end shouldnt loose any gear 90 yard cast should see you clear the snags weve all had bad days on there hope this helps ps i was there yesterday and seen a big seal comming up with.big fish in its gob unluck on the lost fish

That's something similar to what happened to me a couple of weeks back, fishing the walkway for the first time.

I'd only had a couple of knocks in a couple of hours then got a proper bite and hooked something that felt very decent (to me anyway) it was definitely alive and kicking like mad, it felt like a full string of four mackerel or something but I only had one hook on and the mackerel were long gone

Anyway, I was yarking it in maybe should have given it some line? I don't know but any way, it gave a proper solid pull, then the 40lb leader snapped and when I got the line in, it looked as if something had cut it diagonally with a sharp knife.

I've noticed at least one big seal kicking about, every time I've been down the pier over the last 5/6 weeks mind, and wondered if maybe I'd fallen foul of "sammy" but who knows?

The same happened at the 44 mark to me the other year my mates shouting its huge then the line gave up on the lift . I didn't even see the fish , gutted . Hope you get another chance at it mate you never no . Good luck

Unlucky mate sounds like a late Pollock from that mark to me, a lot to be said for weak links on SS pier
