I don't get out too often but called up SSP yesterday and it was closed!! The weather didn't seem bad at all apart from a good breeze blowing. Does it close often? It's the first time Ive seen it closed during the day without a weather warning being in place.

tends to get shut now when too windy, probs to do health and safety

To some extent it depends which pier watchman is on duty.
it was open this morning but closed at about 12 o'clock as it was getting too windy. It was westerly and there was no water coming over the pier.
It seems any excuse to close it.

To me it's just a bonus if the gates open, now automatically assume it will be closed and will need to climb around, easy enough like, but....

last time me and my m8 fished ssp the guy walked along around 3.45 pm and said he was going to close the gate at 4.30pm. but if we wanted to stay it was down to us,
we would have had to climb around the gate on the way off at my age its a no no + my mate has a problem with his leg.
so we just moved down to the first gate before going home.

At least he came along and told you. The gate was locked on Saturday around midday without any warning to the people already on there. Not on really.
