Just back from a few days away with the Bairn, obviously had to take the fishing gear as we had a few days booked up at Eyemouth in a canny Cottage.
Arrived at Eyemouth on Thurs Morn after few days at Slayley, booked into Cottage and straight out after consulting Mr Pye on the local shots for a bit of Wrasse and Pollack fishing with the light gear.
"Aye no problem, there's a canny accessible shot, just left of St Abbs lighthouse into deep water" so off we set with cool boxed Ragworm and a few sandeel.
We arrived at the shot about 20 mins later. JESUS he is Avin a laugh. Accessible maybe, but he didn't mention it was 300ft down a goat track, and you'd need crampons and 300ft of rope ?
Not wanting to miss out we yomped our way down the sheer rock face and onto what I would describe as a bit of a skeer which was thirty foot high and went out to sea, only trouble was it was shaped like a Pyramid. No way are we fishing here son I said, so we turned and started to re climb the goat track ? I knew it was steep when we passed a mountain Lion and Aztec village on the way back up. Got to the top and canny fella from the National Trust tells us that they have a canny few anglers fall into the sea off that point who need rescuing. I ain't surprised!!
He points us back towards St Abbs Harbour as there are a few rocks accessible to fish from which would suit.
We arrived shortly afterwards and tried out the floats baited with rag. Nothing after half hour so I transferred to a bit of ledgering with rag, which soon resulted in a canny Ballan Wrasse of around two pounds, the Bairn quickly changed tactics and we both had a canny few out to these tactics, mostly wrasse to around 3 lbs but the Bairn had a few coley, around the 2 lb mark out as well.
Although we were entertained by the Wrasse, I changed tactics again and tried spinning to see if I could tempt a Pollack out but nothing.
I returned to the ledgering and tried to catch up with the bairns running total and soon we were even with twelve each.
At around 7pm as the sun began to set, a local comes over and asks if we had tried for the Pollack, I told him I had a few hours earlier but no good.
" they come out now at this time of night " he says, try a little silver lure.
Out with the lure and first chuck wallop a nice Pollack of around 4lbs which was taken only around 3ft from the rock edge, I hadn't landed it and the Bairn was changing tactics to the spinner and we had a few out between us over the next half hour, around the 2lb mark.
I then had a good take which snapped me clean on 15lb braid, as I re set up the Bairn, shouts over, "well that's me got the biggest out" I turned to see him landing a cracking Pollack of over 5lbs. What a cracking solid fish it was, as he proudly held it like a trophy, my bloody iPhone runs out of battery as I was about to take a shot, gutted for the lad but he was still happy with his fiver winnings. What cracking day out and a bit of father /son bonding. All fish returned and the wildlife outstanding. I must buy a little waterproof camera to stick in my bag.
Ps the total for the day for seven hours fishing was. 20/19. To the Bairn !!
