fished st abbs area yesterday, set off at 4.30am for a 2 hour drive, decided to fish bottom of pettico wick as sea conditions were too rough to fish elsewhere. stayed there few hours with not a bite, water crystal clear so decided to do bit spinning with no luck with that either, after there headed to eyemouth harbour, nowt there either so head dwn coast nearer home, ended up on amble pier still nowt!!!!! bait tried was lug yellowtail rag bluey mussel macky, roll on summer i say so can get bk up to st abbs for pollock.

lovely place st abbs carnt wait to get back up in the summer floating ledgering ,spinning bottom fishing ,wrasse ,pollock, codling ,good size coalies mackerel ya carnt get to the bottom for them :D

I was at the harbour a few days ago and got some savage takes on float fished rag and mackerel strip.

The crane at the end of the jetty makes casting a pain but you don't need a big chuck - it's thick kelp either side with a clear channel where the boats come through.

Chatting to a local guy he said you can get coalies and pollack most of the year round, and red cod all year from the weed beds. Craster is roughly the same - folks say they are waiting for better weather but my daughter caught her first ever fish on Friday afternoon in the first gulley past Craster harbour on float fished rag. It was a coalie just over a pound and she thought she'd hooked a shark:)

I tried dropping a big bait into the kelp at St Abbs but got no sniffs. Will be up there again probably at the end of the week for another crack at it though, or back to the rocks at Craster with a float outfit and spinning gear so that I can throw a shad while watching the float.

did you climb right round petico wick or just fish of the landing down thier?
we fished dwn bottom on rocks to right of jetty then had to go on to jetty cos of tide, only stayed there little while as few diving boats in area, anybody had any success in this area??? I loved the place was stunning, defo goin up beginning my

As fish fingers implied, clambering around the big rock and fishing out to sea or back into the channel gives you the best chance, although the climb is a bit exposed, if you're not too fleet of foot. There's a chapter in the book on Pettico Wick, the water's not as deep as other spots but the south side is much better than the slopey skeers on the opposite north side.

Read the book, read Jarrow Viking's catch reports, get the walking boots on and have a look. If you see somewhere you like on Bing maps, or similar, pm me and I'll help all I can.

hi stores,

i have read the book looking to hit as many as the marks as i can this summer, was just wondering in your opinion what is the earliest in the year these can be fished would it be worth a shot in april or would that be a bit too early.

Cheers Ben

Not the easiest question to answer Ben but here's some factors you might want to consider:

On the Negative Side:

Firstly if you go up in April and catch nothing then the first excuse or reason is that it's too early yet we know that there are fish around in the winter and some are resident.

Secondly the weather conditions, temperature of the water and tides are all factors, just as they are in the middle of summer, but they tend to get overlooked because of the "it's too early" lobby.

Thirdly, I think, is the bait issue. Is April too early for crab to peel? Most would say yes but frozen fish well up there and don't forget the cock dogger peels before the hen and we'd all prefer a bucket full of cock peelers rather than hens.

On the Positive Side:

When Eyemouth was a popular comp venue it's Festival was always held in May or early June - much earlier than when I usually fish it, in the summer holidays. There must be a reason for the timing.

When NESA had it's boat comp I'd come up to help on the admin side then slope off up there for the rest of the weekend. Here I've had some of my most succesful trips. That was in May.

Finally and, I think, very important is water clarity. The clearer the water in summer the better the fishing would be a good summary of my trips north of the border, all the way up to Aberdeen. Perhaps we simply get better weather later in the summer but an early calm spell could produce bumper results.

Personally I wouldn't go until second half of May unless there's a settled spell.

Thanks for the info some important things to consider. think i what i will do is see how warm it is in april and if we have a settled spell have trip up 3rd week in april with a load if crab and try my luck.if no success then leave it a few weeks and go back up
