got up at 3am and went to st marys island, still dark as I crossed over and not a person in sight.set up on the front and watched the sun come up.fantastic morning to be out.anyway nothing first couple of casts then a bite, cast back to same spot and had,nt got the rod in the stand and its away again.every cast to this spot gave me a bite,if I was 20 yards out in either direction nothing.dont know if I was hitting a whole or gap in the kelp and there was fish holding up there,i new if I was in the spot as id get a knock within 5 mins .ended up with loads of codlings from tiny (as pic) to a few size,i kept one to eat, when I gutted it there was a fish in its belly(weaver I think).also got a wrasse and missed lots of bites to.used a 2/0 manta with fresh and frozen crab plus frozen muscle ,run out of bait in the end and was putting the old bait id cut off back on the hook and still getting bites.made up for the blanks ive had the last couple of weeks

Well done Peter, it's about time you found a few:) It's one of my favourite shots off there (as well as the other side of the post) - on a big tide you'll get a better idea of where the weed-beds are lying, and as you found out, it's often a case of locating a feature that's holding a few fish.

Gary :)

Cracking report. I'm going to have to have a session up there soon with the spinning gear. That's a nice looking ballan you got there and that fish from the belly looks like a sea scorpion. Lush sunrise pic. Well done mate.

That looks like a lovely place to fish mate. Some nice fish and a good variety. Well done. I might have a go up there myself one time.

Nice one mate. That fish that was in the cod's gut is definitely a scorpion fish (non poisonous) and not a weever. Don't think a cod would tackle a weever with a poisonous sting. I've found scorpion fish in cod's bellies on numerous occasions, and I'm starting to think they may even be a good bait from a boat when attached to a hook still alive. they are quite numerous in rock pools, and would keep alive in a bucket of sea water, changed regular during a boat trip.
Mind you cod are nearly always stuffed with hardback crabs, but no one seems to bother with them !

Beautiful first light pics there.. the back of the island is often a tackle graveyard so you must have been hitting a sweetspot ... well done :)
