Excuse my ignorance - still a bit if a novice.

Have seen a few photos latest of codling on the locker.

Is this the start if the cod season? If so what baits do you recommend? I heard that the cods diet changes as the season progresses.

Cheers James

The codling have been here all summer mate. I've had about 6 sized out whilst bait fishing this summer so far...which is almost as well as I did in the whole of last winter! LOL. Defo worth having a go from the piers now

Bigger fish show around October to jan then the spawning females Around jan/feb first big seas of September can throw good bags out, roll on north eastleries lol

Don't know how long you are in Liverpool area but if you are around for a few months, give Otterspool promenade a try. Fished there a few times and it can fish really well for Codling (I've seen them up to 8lb).

Been getting them off shields pier all summer, at the start of the summer they were going for crab, then I started getting more on Ragworm, now they've seemed to switch to lugworm.

Went down to Seaham south pier yesterday.
Took mackerel feathers expecting to be able to use them but the sea was dirty so had no luck.
Saw a few sloppy worms in a newspaper someone had kindly left, that the seagulls hadn't found so I managed to salvage two of them and got into a codling in no time at all. Only a pound and a half but better than nothing.

Was casting midway in towards the harbour between the piers as the seaward side was badly weedy.

By the way, this is the 1st time I've been on the south pier. The new steps down the bank aren't the easiest to get down and getting up them at my age I really need a Stannah.
