So, I've not really had a decent fish in Lord knows how long, seemed like whiting, coalies and flatties were going to be an eternal torment!
I got to thinking lately that in my late teens I used to catch some decent fish, but I never had any fancy gear, infact I had some real crap kit!
Being short on sinkers at the minute, I kept the spark plugs from my last couple of car services - I was thinking of trying Cullercoats and I remembered (from when I was about 17) that it was a tackle graveyard... So, today I got some bait and headed down there after tea to see how the place had changed..
Couple of casts from the south breakwater and a snag each time I reemembered just how bad that place is! Still I was getting some small knocks with each cast so I stuck it out.. half an hour in and a steam train hit the bait! No idea of the weight on this since my kitchen scales are teeny things.. but it was like dragging a tractor out of the water!
Hit into two more heavy fish but snagged up on both and lost them :-(
Cool fun though - 30lb main line, old fixed spool reel, old hollow glass heavy beachcaster and a spark-plug for a sinker
Rag, Lug and squid cocktails each cast getting a lot of small knocks and a few big ones.
Lot of fireworks going off all over the place and I gave up when some tossers arrived on the north side of the bay with huge rockets and started firing them all over the place bar up into the air...
So there you go, no lightweight carbon rod, no flashy multiplier, just one hook and a sparkplug sinker is all you need
