posted on 31/10/2004 at 16:41the weather fairies were kind again, only got rained on once. Had a week at me usual haunts, kilchoan pier, Ardnamurchan lighthouse, sanna bay and a new rock mark a mile or so NW of the lighhouse. Just fished ithe odd hour here and the odd hour there, longest sesh was just a couple of hours.

Never seen as many pollack. very few decent sized ones, best of the week a shade under 3lb, the vast majority either bang on a pound or so or about 6oz!

had a great couple of hours with the bairns at a new rock mark, fairly deep water right under your feet so equipped em with a float, and a size 1 aberdeen with a lug on. soon as it was in the water and the worm sank, bang goes the float and they wind in another sardine sized pollack, every time, so was great for them, finn got bored fairly quickly with this so he took on the role of fish unhooker and collected them all into a large rock pool, I got the job of putting the worms on and holly hauled em in.

got the fly rod out from here as well and caught loads of the litttle bleeders, but did get a canny scrap from one about a pound or so.

Lighthouse put in its usual performance just as the sun set, but biggest suprise of all was mackeral! only 2 caught but never heard of that as late as this in the season...kept half pound sized pollack which were gratefully scoffed by all concerened.

Kilchoan pier not as busy fish wise as in the past but still loads of little uns for the bairns with their float gear, a passing creel boat threw us a bag full of langoustines as they were unloading which were superb, if any one ever gets there, low tide at kilchoan, collect some mussels, aprt from the fact they taste lovely, there's a canny few with pearls in.

caught a couple of flounders off the pier and had a few more from sanna bay, and 1 plaice and a couple of dabs, all canny small. used the Okuma nitryx baitcaster and a carp rod. well chuffed with the reel. wasn't getting a massive distance initially, so took it apart and discovered 6 brake blocks! took em out and birds nested to buggery first cast so put 2 back and found it perfect for everything I used it for, including spinning.

fished every day though, sometimes just for half an hour, but caught every time. I reckon this area must be a massive nursery for pollack, there must literally be millions of em, I suppose in the dog eat dog (fish eat fish?) world the big uns must get wary and move off elsewhere, but if you just want fun, take as light a gear as you can and its a hoot.

Tried just shoving a lump of rag on a hook and lobbing out with the fly rod at one point, never failed to catch.

best catch of the week though was in a tiny bay in portuairk, theres a small river that drops over the rocks onto the beach but floods at high tide, Sea trout, best of the 3 I caught was about 3 and half pounds, caught em on a spinner but wished I had the fly rod instead

roll on next year
