hello, iv been using a fixed spool for a while now with a cheapy rod, im wanting to upgrade to an good rod and a multiplier reel, but the couple experiences iv had with multiplier iv managed to birdsnest everytime.
any ideas for a good rod and multiplier reel to start with that will be cheapish and easy to learn on ?

second hand slosh30 pick one up on here in half decent condtion for around the 40-50 quid thats what i started on and as for rod really depends what ground you fish

hope this helps :)

u wont need a super distance reel then ...525 mag/ slosh20/30..abu will do the job as well ...i dont like the level wind myself prefer one without ........

I'd get one with a mag mate then you'd be able keep the mags on full till you get the feel of it.

Or buy a second hand saltist and put a mono mag conversion on it, its a 5min job
and a cracking reel for hauling fish up a pier wall

Get a 7ht Turbo mate, you can probably get one second hand for £50 or around £120 new. Like others you can tighten it up when you're getting used to it but let loose it will perform very well for distance. Avoid level winds like a dose or you'll never cast properly. Another good reel is the mag version but it's more expensive though it has got the mag control for stopping overruns.
Last but not least, the sl30, bullet proof, cheap, excellent for rough ground and a good casting reel.

If its your first multiplier i would recommend an all rounder like a Daiwa slosh 20 or 30 for cheapness. the slosh20 good upto 20lb breaking strain with shockleader (10lb for every ounce e.g 5oz = 50lb) or a slosh30 good with 30 straight through with good knots and a overhead thump cast, if you cast more powerful you will need a shockleader. If you buy a new one make sure you open the reel up and fit the centrifugal brakes as some dont come with them already fitted this will slow the reel down during the cast. also dont fill the reel to the brim with line leave a little space as your not gonna cast it all off and a reel full of line is more likely to nest as the lower the diameter of line in the spool the less likely the nest. finally set the size tension knob next to the handle tight at first and ease it back until you find your best cast without nesting the reel these reels dont have a levelwind so you will have to thumb the line side to side and keep it even when winding in..... jobs a gooden.

Keep your fixed spool as your back up and later on go for the more advanced reels i.e abu 6500mags, 7ht's mags, daiwa saltists, penn mags, bearing upgrades, mag conversions etc and the slosh can become your backup reel and your tuned reel become your first choice distance reel.

Good Luck

Fished with Abu's for years, but recall there was a learning curve.
Just bough my 1st Diawa 7ht (got a bargain 2nd hand). Finding it so easy to cast with, can literally chuck hard as poss with my eyes closed and never been close to a nest yet.. Just my opinion.

wow lots of advice , cheers one and all. im going to have a look on ebay at a few of em before i decide. what about rods tho as the cheap ones i got bounce all over in the wind.
p.s i never knew there were so many different options with the reels, got my head hurting a lil haha once again thanks

Depends on your budget about rods, your casting ability and built, dont want a rod to stiff or to soft. you would probably be best trying out a few of your mates for a go of there rods as you dont want to fork out for a new rod which you just can't get used to. The main makes of rod IMHO I would look at would be century, reelsport, sonik and afaw The chances are one of those manufacturers will have a rod which will suit your need and ability

the rods that dont bounce about in the wind are stiff rods mate and i dont think you would benefit from buying one of those if you are just starting to use a multi reel as they are harder to compress for casting my choice as have owned them both would be sonik sk3, or a anyfish any where 6*bait and they are both good rods for under £150 new but will still move in a strong wind but in a more controlled fashion than cheap floppy stick rods my choice would be the 6&bait as they have genuine fugi rings fitted and are a lot better than the sk3 cheaper options that shatter if you drop the rod or in my case a dog walker knocks your rod off the stand on sheilds pier
hope this helps
ps if you say where you are from people who live near you might let you have a go of there rods, reels so you find a set up that suits you instead of making a educated guess
