I've made my own for over 20 years and got several moulds. The most successful by far is a fish shaped one that looks a bit like a bigger version of the krill, it's a heavy one, it weighs almost 3 oz. It out fishes everything I've ever used even the shentons (which by the way are excellent spinners) the extra weight means you can fish it really deep even in the strongest of tides. The only time I use any other spinner is fishing shallow water over kelp where I prefer a slower sinking spinner. The best shop bought spinner by far is the original Abu krill the newer version is good but nowhere near as good as the original ones (the larger version, can't remember the weight) most spinners will take plenty fish but some are unbelievably more successful. I have honestly seen times where 3 of us have used my home made spinners and had 50 / 60 macky each and the most anyone else has had has been about 10.

Yeah I remember you tried landing a few on my head hahaha,
yeah they were cracking lures. I might try make some myself this year it cost me a bomb in lost spinners last summer. All this talk of spinning has got me gagging for summer I can't wait now, forgot what a mackerel bap tastes like lol. Good luck with the spinning Bestnest.

got the moulds made for me around 20 years ago, unfortunately the maker died a long time ago. the moulds are still going strong, i love spinning in the summer wether it be for pollock or macky and coalies. those moulds have saved me a fortune over the years. the good thing about making your own is that you can fish over much snaggier groung since they're not costing a lot to make.

thats how me and me sons got back into sea fishing through spinning up eyemouth etc in the summer had few pollack coalies and the sea trout. try floating this year aswel. might be worth a look to see if i can get my hands on a mould anywhere. would be a money saver as the dexters wedge cost a lot.

i don't fish a lot for bass but have had good success over at brighouse bay near kirkudbright for them, nothing huge but plenty bass on the occassions ive used them there. the spinners are quite fast sinking so better used where there is either a depth of water or strong tide pull.

This is the mould I bought last year. I paid about half the price as the mould was a slight second. I add the holographic tape as well because the lead tarnishes after a few dips in the water.

Think i will enter the lure fishing challenge, I have a couple of trips to ireland and the mull of galloway lined up..and just stocked up on spinners etc from e-bay
Good man, it makes things very interesting when you actually target spices to catch and very rewarding when you get the fish your after.

Phil for bass what class and size rod do you use is it a 10 or 11ft? 30grm or 30/60grm?
And Best Net mate, the pollack/wrasse fishing i can help you with Especially from dunstanborough, Me and a few other lads are off there in summer when we sort some dates out etc just come along we'll have a good crack on. Or if you cant make that just lemme know when your going and ill pop along, need to get good at taking fishing gear on and off public transport i still suck at it. Especially with a CME the tip section is a killer...

I fish the castle alot in the summer and to second what members are saying you can use pretty much most lures. To start with grab a couple of float kits, some 28g-40g silver spinners ( nowt too fancy ) and for the larger pollock some jelly worms and lead heads ( I prefer the black firetails but its all about experimenting ). You can also fish the jellies on a long trace and running ledger. Like a previous post says try casting along the rocks rather than out to sea and this should find fish. If using braid you can try a slow retreive and feel the fish attacking the lure but be brave and dont strike until the rod tip swings over. Pollock in particular are known for this. There has been some good advice on this thread so whatever happens enjoy some great days out in the summer its a beautiful place to fish and tight lines.
