Had a few hours out on the boat today , what a fantastic day to be out at sea in a boat , flat seas , wall to wall sunshine, dolphins leaping , fish biting , why can't it be like that more often ?
Anchored up for the first time on Eleda, I'll definitely be doing it again, I had three wrass , three tommy codling and a coalie before running out of the meagre supply of bait I took out with me , it was great fun :D

Oh , and I caught my first little codling on a shad :)

i looked at the sea state this morning Ray,

totally better than sat, wished i'd went out today instead :(

great to get out though isn't it...:D and a few fish too..:D

winter anchoring it is then ?

i was southbound on the A19 when i had a call telling me how good it was today..and a report of a big fish... ( if it's true )

not what i really wanted to hear....

It is true :D IMG-20121021-00157.jpg
just over 23lb

I didn't catch anything like that fish above :D, but I thoroughly enjoyed my few hours out , I just wish I'd went earlier and bought more bait , it was relaxing and fun, cod fishing on the wrecks is hard work , today was like being a kid again dangling a line over the side and waiting for a bite :D.
I have to admit , if I get another chance at a day like that though , I think I'll head for the horizon and look for something more like the fish in the picture , otherwise it's anchors away ;)

the thing is Ray ......you can do what you want, as a boat owner you can decide what you want to do on the day..

on sat we had intentions of hitting the 12-15m wrecks, clear water etc..

as it was, weather and sea state prevented this...so we had to make do with fishing on areas we pretty much knew would not give up fish...

sunday, was a different day alltogether, as Jims post revealed...

thats fishing i suppose.....

winter fishing at anchor....yes please..:D

Glad you've seen the light Ray. It is a much more relaxing way to fish. Was there much tide pull at anchor, it's just I find it more productive when there is a light to medium flow out the back of the boat.:):)

Totally agree with Arthur, sitting there.... cuppa in one hand, chocolate digestive in the other, waiting for the fish to bite......my idea of relaxed fishing....:):):)

It was great Arthur , the tide was pulling quite fast through the back of the boat , not that I've ever done it before to compare like, pulling at the lines as well , it wasn't very relaxing when the fish were biting , I had a rod on each side of the boat and as fast as one was reeled in the other was nodding away :D, don't know about sitting with a cuppa lol.
I was going to take some mackerel out the freezer and forgot to take it so called in at the tackle shop in amble and bought a pack of ragwort and a pack of frozen squid , there was probably only ten rag in the bag and while they lasted it was a bite every drop, I had two hook rigs on, one with squid the other with rag , the squid never got touched and when I ran out of ragwort the bites stopped , I was surprised , I always thought them fishes would eat owt if they were hungry .

Ray, Can you not remember the advert a few years back with the slogan "Everything stop for tea" and McVittee's......well thats me...:D;)

I can't drag myself away from the rods long enough to make tea Chris , I was looking for rigs in the cabin and nearly put a cric in my neck trying to see the rod tips whilst I was there :D
How deep is it practical to anchor in ? Anybody? I was only in about 40 ft of water , had to tie up half way up with the anchor and drive it out when it got stuck but pulling it up was easy once it was freed , no windless on my boat, if I get a bit of practice at it I might anchor in some deeper water , or get one of them anchor Yankers .
What do yous reckon?

The Alderney Ring method is great Ray, i gave Arthur the set up i had a couple of years back, have a look on Youtube, i think there is a vid on there to show it working.
I usually anchor up in 40-70 feet of water when uptiding. I havent anchored up any deeper than that so cant really comment.
Ask Adele to get you a windlass for Xmas, i had one on the M/F brilliant bit of kit.....push the button in the cab and up it comes.....:)

Cracking Ray, winter fishing! I didn't have a single day off last time home so I am itching to get off if the weather is do-able when I get home for a go at this anchoring mullarkey!
Was it broken ground you anchored on and nothing too rough? My plan if I get a chance is to try two wrecks(that have produced this year for us) and if there's nothing straight to anchor!

Graham.
