Sunderland Today,

The Jester

Well-known member
Hi All,

We decided to have a couple of hours fishing today and give the Jester a runout, first since Mid November:( Started fishing about 2.00 using rag, frozen runnydown, squid and sandeels. Only one fish caught just under 3lb on the uptide gear, no fish on the downtide gear. Tried a few diffrent spots about a mile out off Hendon then came in about 5.00. Not much fish but great to be afloat again :) even though my DAB Radio is goosed due to dampness and having to cut loose the anchor on the last spot ( Alderney Ring didnt work. ):casstet:
Just a word of advice on the frozen crab cart bait available from the frozen bait suppliers, it looks great when you buy it in the packet but soon as it defrosts you end up with a bag of red water, steer clear..........Chris....

Good to hear you got out and managed a couple of fillets.
Its a bonus just to make it out this time of year.
I'd been thinking of trying that cart, what supplier did you get it from ?

Hi, Got them from Online Baits UK who say they are best cut into 3 parts and elasticated onto the hook, but when i checked the sealed bag it was just red water. I will still use them for other frozen baits though as they are really good, just not for cart.......

thats because you are suppose to use cart froozen i always keep mine in a flask as they last longer and just get 1 out when i need it and whip it on the hook while froozen it looked a nice day out there today thought there would have been more fish about well done on the cod though it saves a blank :)

nets at ryhope has tubs of froozen cart available

we were out on the boat today ,[sunderland] only a couple of mile off weather was good cold though ;)me and me mate never got a bite and we even tryed a couple of close wrecks out of desperation ,NOT A BITE,fished for 4 hours ,thats our first ever blank on the boat:( ,nebver mind the boat got its testing out and much needed run ,thats why we went ,fishing is desperate ,my shore gear now is holding the plants up lol.ol plummy ps i think cart sucks aswell

get your cart from the guys on the whitby site - cut up and wrap yourself and as said keep frozen until on the hook.

It is always poor in March for boat fishing from my records, i tried last year a couple of times and had the odd 1 from St Marrys fav mark and the odd one from Close in off Tyne good mark.

Thats why i dont start until mid-late April but saying that others have better luck when they find a pocket of codling feeding..its the wrecks that do it for me thou and they a while off being productive yet.imho

Thanks for the replies lads, i agree march is a dodgy month but being out on the boat beats sitting in the house, even got a sun tan on the back of my neck :), i would have put the cart in a flask but reckon the coffee would do it no favous deano . I thought if it did defrost it would have been mush which i would have put in a mesh bandage, but this literally turned to water with no crab bits in it at all. I'll try NETS next time.....Looking good this week is anyone lucky enough not to be working.......

lol just get a cheap vaccum flask and store them in there untill u need 1 the cart in nets is already bandaged up so you just need to whip it on i think cart is highly underated all the lads down scarborough use it im hoping to get out this sunday so ill give some a try and let you know how i get on

Good to hear you got fishing in "Jester" and got a fish. Pain to loose the anchor though. I got sick of loosing them, so started making grapnel ones from 1/4 inch round bar that pull out by bending with a bit of pressure from engine.
It's starting to warm up a bit, so, not be long to wet a line in "lazy-daze". Arthur.

Nice to hear from you Arthur, sounds like a good idea 1/4" round bar i'll give it a go. You been out on the boat yet or had any luck off the pier ?
