swordfish sighted

Sorry Ell thats the only thing I can think of, unless it was a shark.. no white lightning drank tonight only Mc Best scotch & a few tins of guinness, just trying to work out what the lad saw, How old is he/ are you?? cheers Tich :)

Hallow ermmm \"mikethe pike\"......welcome to NESA.

Brian, don\'t be so sceptical.........it\'s a well known fact that swordfish used to be quite a common site on the surface.......infact, here\'s a painting of one..........

As the one mikethepike seen was only 4 feet long, I can only assume it was a model...... ;)

mikethepike,
dont bite,4 years ago i seen a turtle up at amble .ive seen sun fish off the tyne .wales as well.i saw a kingfisher and and otter last week at sheils .and a seal at gateshead. but never a sail fish pmsl ha ha ha ha ha ;) ;).there a good set off lads on here they just take the mick

fishbase is running like a bag of spanners, you might need to refresh that page a few times to get it to load....

I remember seeing a photo recently of the carcass of a billfish washed up on the shore of some Loch up in Scotland. There\'s no reason not to believe that a billfish could have wandered up our way. Like codhead says there have been turtles washed up at Amble and Alnmouth in the past!

The shores and seas of Britain are kept warm by the influence of the Gulf stream. So we end up with the wet and mild climate that we have. Other areas of the European/Asian continental land mass and North American continental land mass which are at the same latitude or even closer to the equator have much harsher and colder winters than we have. The off shoot of this warmer climate and sea current influence is that fish (and reptile / mammal) species associated with (sub)tropical areas are often seen in our seas. Indeed in the early part of the last century, there was once a thriving North Sea Tuna commercial fishery operating out of Whitby North Yorkshire.

It is very easy to blame global warming on the effects of mans pollution of the planet etc., on that note how do the scientist explain the recent warming of the surface of the moon and our local planetary neighbours Mars and Venus. Current thinking is that the suns activities are causing the additional warming. During the Roman occupation of Britain, the climate was warm enough to make wine from grapes grown in vineyards located in the Vale of York.

youre dead right chris im sure north shields had a tune fleet a 100 years ago aswell.i wouldnt be surprised if a swordfish has been spotted after all it is a predator and with the abundance of whiting at the moment why not.ive seen some peculiar things on our coastline(pilot whales, dead 20ft squid) and a few years ago i cut out an article from the chronicle reporting a 20ft great white shark spotted 2 miles off tynemouth!so put that in yer pipe and smoke it.

red 5 the turtle was alive mate and alan charllton put this in the paper.years ago the posh nobs fished for tulley off the north east coast.this year we had a norwegion red fish off a wreck,so who knows wots in our seas

well ah think chris is spot on it\'s not that impossible ( due to global warming )to have seen it, unless it was a bit of tin foil with a chrome spike attatched to it , and who knows what next might pop up on land ,sea or even air due to the greehoose effect :P

ya might be right Mikethepike :D

Codhead ... I saw a Sunfish off NE coast 20 years back. Coulda leant over and kissed the bugger.

err I was in a boat at the time obviously, a Bonwitco With with freeboard of about 10cm. oars and a silver century on the back. I\'m sure me dad was trying to off me at the time \"Is it not my turn for the life jacket dad, please sit down and stop rocking the boat!\"
