I have 12 year old twin boys who are only allowed on msn if they go on the pc that is in the living room so I can keep an eye on things. I had to get them to decipher the gobbledeegook that the girls have beside their names. 
scary stuff and I bet their parents havent a clue that they sign themselves as sexy babe etc. as they wont be able to understand the writing. I hate reading posts on here that are written in text speak and only make an attempt to work out what they say because I am moderating.

go into the msn prefs/options and turn the save conversations feature on,
saves em all as text files, I hate to thinki I'm snooping, but the bairns' all get saved, and thankfully I've never had cause to look at them

While I'm not a parent (yet) I can see myself being a complete Internet Nazi with my children - the amount of cr*p you can find that doesn't require any age checks is unbelievable
(so I'm told:red..and getting back to the gist of the thread I plan on having an old fashioned school desk in the corner of the living room where (if I catch em talking gibberish) I can send them for lines and such like...
...or I'll be soft as clarts and they'll be totally unruly

its yet another reason (not that I need one
) that this is a mac only household, the bairns have little mac minis in their bedrooms, and the OS sorts the vast majority of nasties out of the box, mail gets filtered and screened first, no viruses, dodgy spyware, pop ups, I more or less leave em to it and touch wood never had a single problem yet
