the roker otter

fished roker pier lastnight till this morning very dissapointing for most folk anyway i blanked goodstyle but there was a strange visitor joined us on the roundhead where it came from we do not know im guessing the last steps and made its way up on top .it went walkies to avoid us and back down the roundhead steps and back up lol never seen anything like it in my time fishing so the roker otter i named it

aye with roker being in sunderland i'd expect nothing more than a overgrown rat, lol there was 11 of them kicked all over the turf by bolton today lmfao. have fun in the championship at least you might win something

i have seen and herd funny things on that pier few years back was at the bunker you could see nothing fog like soup but you could hear this strange crying coming from the sea, made your hair stand on end .. the bloke down from me said he seen something floating in the sea any way he phone the police ,, police drove up the pier you could still hear this crying noise ..
police phone the coast guard ,,ten minites later ,coast guard, helicopters, the works after a full search the crying was a seal and the life boat towed a bath back ot port

Ive seen seals on tynemouth pier, must have came up the stairs, it dived in when shone the headlight on it.
Seen massive rats too. good conga bait.

Sad that it takes a topic about a rare species in our rivers for our black and white cousins to try and have a dig about football

Shouldn't we be excited that we have confirmed sightings of these magnificent creatures in the Wear? I've seen them in captivity in a place in SW scotland, and they really touch your heart.

sorry about the football crap lads i couldn't resist...... yes it is great to see a creature like that, i love any kind of wildlife so i wish i'd seen it or if someone could get a pic of it that would be great. i was on tynemouth one night and there was a seal on the end (sea's were very rough) and i got a small whiting and me being me i tried to feed this whiting to the seal and nearly lost my hand.

You sure it wasn't a rat coddy - have you seen the size of some of them lol. Nice to see things like that mate. I remember being on the end of roker pier with a couple of the lads and we saw a school of dolphins. Thought they were porpoises until they came up close. There must have been 15-20 of them. A little baby jumping out of the water none stop pestering it's mum. Isn't it great living by the seaside!

Great to watch. Remember camping years ago outside Jedburgh and we got up early to watch them. Want to see them chasing eels in the river, can't believe how quick they are.

Two years ago fishing in Luce Bay was landing a fish when my light caught something, an otter came out the water with a whiting in it's gob and ran off up the beach. Graet to watch.

Otters have quite large territories, so the same one that's been seen up the glassy will likely be same one as seen on the pier (there will likely be a pair).

I've seen a few up our way when fishing. One was when I came up onto the bank after fishing Spooky House and it was running along the path toward me in the dark, saw me and shot off in the opposite direction.
The other was fishing the Sugar Sands and saw these orange eyes in the water 20 yards out in front, when my Leds caught them. Turned on the full beam as I thought for some strange reason it was a fish, and the otter jumed out of the water onto a rock ledge, sat for about 30 secoinds before taking back to the sea and swimming off.
Heard of a few lads who have seen em in that area as well as around Seaton Point.
Apparently it's rare for otters in our part of the world to take to the sea, as this only tends to occur on the West Coast of Scotland. Seems we've got a population of Otters who like the salt water better than the fresh water as there was a report in the press last week of one that has appeared on the Farne Islands....The wardens are petrified that it's gonna eat the eggs of the nesting birds come next spring.
