Thinking about spinning gear

Mad as a fish

OK I have never done any spinning before and I am thinking about giving it a try so i need some advice on rods and reels.
I would like something that can cast a good distance and can handle fishing rough ground.
What would you lot advise, I don't want to spend loads on something that I will only use now and then, but I would like some thing half decent thats not going to break easy.:)

Best spinning rod I've used to date has to my Berkly CherryWood Pro. At 10ft, casts 40-80grm, it can fire spinners of 40grm a long way and can easily handle the rough stuff. Also available in 9ft if u want a shorter version.

Spinning reel wise I cannot go past my shimano's, but there are many cheaper options on rhe market (even some decent Abu's and okuma's) that are just as good and will suite you fine.

If your interested in the rods there available in Reelsport now for £40, well worth it for these quality pieces of kit... ;)

Hi mate. I would recommend a 10ft spinning rod which will give you more distance than the shorter ones and are still pretty light and easy to handle. Lightweight is important as you will be constantly casting and retrieving all day and may be climbing up and down rocks depending on where you go fishing. The spinners I typically use are around the 20-30g size so my 15-60g rod flings them out well , I also have a 1 to 3oz (28-85g) spinning rod which is stiffer so better for hauling bigger fish up the pier wall but does not cast the smaller spinners as far yet it can also be used for a bit of light ledgering with a 3oz weight.

Reelwise Shimano have a great reputation. I would go for a 4000 size and depending on your budget you could get a Shimano Exage for £60 or if you have a tight budget you could get a Penn Captiva 4000 for £37 which are canny reels for the money (I have used one of these for three years now with no problems). Ebay is the cheapest place to buy reels imo so worth a browse there.

Maybe next time I'm fishing next to you we will both be spinning :)

There are a few rods on the market designed for multi's but these tend to based in the US and the rods are quite short.... wouldn't advise them for over here. As the lads have said a nice 10ft rod with a decent fixed spool... I picked one up from Frasers in Gateshead at the start of the summer for cheap enough, about £40 I think and does the job plenty well enough. Hope you get one sorted out soon Mad, will see you on the pier soon no doubt, spinners in hand!

Pretty much as said already, I bought a 10' shakey alpha x spinning rod 30-80gram from terry in reelsport, I must say it's a cracking rod for the 20 quid pricetag. Perfect replacement for my Ron Thompson x-cite that the bairn snapped last week lol.
