Nar,wings been cut off, the wings are the only edible part of a thornback ray.
They look a canny size as well.

Dave have you got any idea how big they where length/weight they look pretty small to me and why have the wings been removed before they where landed and sold at market???

They were around 30-35cm not very big at all a couple were around 40cm but none bigger than that not to sure of a weight but they were very thin

Ive never seen thornbacks before so its a new experience to me

There's a good possibility that these fish were taken by set lines,it coincides with the big tides over the weekend.

This method was used a lot on the Hall beach at Seaham Harbour and loads of thornback rays were taken by set lines revolving on a pulley system pegged out to sea on big spring tide.

The multi-hooks baited with any fish bait and could be hauled in at any state of the tide and re baited then hauled back out again.

There are no minimum size for rays! Which makes this legal. Utter stupidity in my book!.
The minimum size limits are a complete joke! Especially for cod! I've ranted about this before so won't bore you again!

used to work down there.fish merchants wing them and offal the rest;if offal binns overflowed and taken away, they just dump carcasses in tyne, probobly washed up then on beach.happens a lot.

It is a shame havnt caught one myself either should be dispose of correctly rather than dumped

terrible to see that, but that`s the way the fishing industry is, why buy a whole fish, wen you can buy only the edible wings. but they should be discarded in a better way. ! .

Come on..

Has no one ever gutted/filleted a fish and but the remains back in the sea?!

Just feeding the eco system if you ask me.

Its these practises that dont help the fishing industry ...if there wanting all the backing they can get, they should treat the catches with respect (im not a hippy)...but if your gonna go kill little tiddlers like that and just dump them...your gonna get peoples backs up...as it has done just that right here:exclam:.

it's the size that I am concerned about, I dump loads of fish bits in the Tyne

It's a disgrace, but legal! There is no MLS (minimum landing size) for skate or rays, which is plain Stupid!
All the minimum sizes need to change!
The MLS for cod needs upping by at least 20cm, just to get them big enough to breed!
How much flesh is on a 35cm Tommy?
