anyone had thornies or any form of skate/ray from the colliery beaches or the northeast? facy landing me one of thes magnificent beasts ...sea angles had mentioned before that durham beaches produces thornbacks....just wonderred if any of yas had any luck recently ...

Yer like eddie says horden throws up the odd thorny
Think there was 2 caught last summer and 2 the year before so not many about mate, av been down a few times with a bucket of crab but no luck yet

there was a lad on here who targeted them locally either last year or the year before, i think it was jarrow viking but i could be wrong. do a search for the report, it might help you out. they are there but i think everything has to be perfect to get them, baits/weather/sea state ect.

There are more than a couple taken every year from all of the colliery beaches. Lots of time and effort is required as well as a little luck. Try fishing over high water with a flat sea on a big tide using crab/bluey/mackerel and sandeel. Take two rods and use one for targetting rays and the other for scratching to keep you occupied. There was a superb double taken last year, darkness seems to be more productive.

try fishing beaches where there are sand banks in casting distance and fish on the banks on a flooding tide, , this strategy works down on the holderness coast, and like sean says flat seas are more productive... and crab and fish baits tend to be the more successful baits....
but you will have more blank days than good days when after rays around here..
good luck..
cheers
Paul

thanks all ....i will be trying horden more and more this summer...anyone else wanna join the quest for the elusive thorny ?
