Tip lights, squid, mackerel and sandeel baits

What tip lights do folks recommend ?

I spent a few quid each on some tiny battery operated onces recently and one went pop on the second trip and the other went pop on the fourth.

So, what do you suggest and where to source them from ?

Also, where are you getting squid, mackerel and sandeel baits ?

Should I be buying fresh where posible from the fish key or just using frozen ?

My habit is to fish 2 rods (tonight or tomorrow it will be three) and I intend throwing a big bait out on a pennel rig and two smaller ones at different ranges.

Rag is all well and good but I remember good results years ago using squid, mackerel and sandeel.

Suggestions much appreciated, especially regarding the tip lights since I'd like to pick these up today if possible.

i know the feeling regarding those tip lights you talk about:mad:
what a lot of the lads use on here and which are inexpensive are the ciggy lighters out of the pound shop five for a pound , they have a little led torch built in which is easily removed and taped to your tip:D try them their good
 
try the glowbug tip light, slimline , bright, holder which you can use snap lights in and they will last a good few sessions
 
sandeel is effective in the warmer months. on the right conditions. squid again has marmite relationship with anglers. mackerel great all rounder all yr. tip lights...well i no longer use them ...i only send it out to sea. i do occasionally use small snap glo stix which i tape to the tip.
 
with regards to tip lights if you do use the chemical ones, after a session you can put them strait into the freezer and snap them again, can get a good 3-4 sessions depening on how long your session is. I use a batt one now and have no issues at all cost me a 5a, batts need changed every so often.

never had any results using squid, mackerel i freeze down for winter after catching in the summer and i know lewis tackle gets live sand eel in every now and again. sand eel can be kept live just like peelers in tank of sea water and a pump and air stone some good posts online if you have a search as i am looking into keeping them live.

Hi marrow its best to get fresh bait if you can as this frozen stuff just does/nt work for me as you dont seem to get the right results with it .it has no smell like fresh bait does ok :D:D:D
 
I just sent my folks up to Lidl to pick me up one of those 50 packs of chemical lights for 3 quid! No idea what they're like, but i'm sure they'll do me next time I'm back! I used to use those battery operated ones that cost about a fiver that you whip a little mounting on the end of your rod and then slide it in, they are good, but I found I lost them two easily (no idea where they go when walking off the rocks or beach), so I just started using the chemical ones again! If you go for one of those make sure you get green as the red ones are a bit harsh on the eyes and remember to whip the mounting on the correct way round otherwise you'll see a little bright light heading for the horizon after you cast (I speak from experience!).

I buy frozen squid for about 2 pound a box and I usually fish a whole one on a pennel rig and then crab/worm on another rod! I only use freshly caught mackerel when fishing up on the west coast of Scotland, or when caught on the boat on our coast so I couldn't comment on the frozen stuff, but I'm sure the general consensus would be to use fresh when you can! ! Never tried sand eel!! Tight Lines Chopper

Same as rocketman I use the ones out of the lighters really cheap, I used to buy the chemical ones but one of them leaked so I swapped over to the battery kind, not that I wouldn't use the chemical ones again there great.

As for any bait fresh or frozen always use local tackle shop if you can't source your own baits, I always leave my squid to defrost for a day or 2 and refreeze it when its stinky and pinky lol, not that it makes any difference I still await my 10lber lol. Mackerel IMHO is the best all round bait and is always one to keep in the freezer for those unplanned sessions when the shops are shut.

If you have a stock of frozen blacks and squid in the freezer there's a good cod bait ready to go, when you are. :cool:

First time i used a battery operated light i cast off on tynemouth pier light came off mid cast seen my light sinkvto the bottom. might not be the best but defo waterproof lol. went knto the tyne and sank to the bottom fully lit.
 
i use the snap lights from cash in a flash or the pound shop when they got them in, quid for 5 or six, they do the job. the only time i really use squid or mackerel [fresh or frozen dont matter to me] is for whity bashin, otherwise i use it to tip off my worm baits in the colder months.
 
I use the chemical snap light sticks, buy mine from lidl 50 for 3 quid bought 3 boxes last winter and still got a couple left n still work great, just bought another 3 boxed

AM NOT GANNIN THERE, SOMEONE MITE SEE ME, she shouted down the phone.
can`t wait til she fly`s the nest and sample`s the real world. ! a got some anyway, well worth 3.00
