i,m thinking of buying a new reel, at the moment i use a bog standard penn 535 married with a imax 6/7rod for rough ground [ and clean ground] fishing; had it for 5 years now and except for the occasional over runs iv,e had no probs with it, but its a bit old and i fancy a new reel . Everyone tells me i have to get a mag, why i ask ,cos they are better, they say; i,v had no probs with my 535 , so can anybody tell me why mag reels are the be all and end all of sea fishing reels

To be honest Paul I have two Penn 525 GS and a 535, I also have a 525 mag and I prefer the GS model to the mag. The only time I have had any problems with my 535 was if I over filled it a bit. I just tend to use my mag with 35 lb line straight through for the rocks now mate.

I prefer the Mag, much easier for the novice caster, mind you, I heard forty odd thousand blokes singing "stand up if you hate the mags" the other day :D

i in the main use abu reels, have both mag and spool breaking ones, personally i dont really see the difference when fishing, ok you can change the breaking easilly with mags but in most circumstances a twitch on the end float is just as good, not into tourny casting were it no doubt makes a difference

one i do use a 6600 d5 has a single adjustment that does the mag breaks and the endfloat one one dial, that does really make the reel perform differently, but only if i am changing the wieghts i am casting
