To Part Exchange or Sell Private?

Just after some advice with regards what to do selling Growler. We are in dialogue with a bloke who's boat we want to buy. He has a set price he wants which we considered a little too high (and it would leave me skint without selling Growler!) so he offered to take ours in part exchange with still a big wedge going his way.
This is the easier option for us but now he is starting to give us Jibber Jabber and pick fault in my opinion just simply to try and knock the price down. His boat is immaculate to be fair.
I just don't know whether to say balls and sell it private on boatsandoutboards or ebay and the like or take a lower price off him(no hassles and the easier option) as this is the likely outcome of the part ex I can see coming. Equally the the boat we want may sell in the meantime! It's got my head done in!

From reading other forums about the hassle people generally have with brokers, to me, I would sell private but thats just my thoughts.

It would be nice and easy to part ex with the broker but he will try knock you down as much as possible as he will want to make the best profit possible, as always it boils down to money.

Take the easy option and part ex and possibly loose money, sell private (if/when it sells) and you should make more money.

Boat prices have gone right up of late, a boat brand/sytel i was looking at 2 years ago from new has now gone up from new £3700 and the 2nd hand ones 2 years old or now going for what you could buy them new.....my boat looking at others selling with the same spec has gone up in price...so not a good time to but but if its what you wnat then go for it

Take the easy option Graham (I`'m all for no hassle) .... but one price as seen no changes after handshake .... then get out fishing in yer beauty new boat .....

I part exed mine Graham , but that was through a dealer and I reckon it would have taken me forever to sell private and then haggle over the price of a new boat , I got far more for my boat than I could have selling private , but then I could probably have got a bigger discount paying cash for the new one.
Depends what sort of bloke you are , I can't be bothered with the hassle of selling things private , I lease my cars so I don't have to go through the part ex or sell thing when I change them , just hand it back and get a new one , I wish I could do that with a boat
I know blokes though that are very good at it and even enjoy it , but I'm not one of them , if it sounds like a decent deal ...... do it , if you think you are being screwed , try and get him to move a bit on the price or find another deal (not easy with a part ex )

We part-ex'd our reiver in when getting Missy. The dealer offered us what i thought was a fair price and that was that. Saved a lot of hastle and time and I never seem to have much time so worked out well.

Set yourself a realistic price that you think your boat is worth and go from there. Maybe accept a little less trading in part ex as it's saving you time and hopefully less hastle. Don't be ripped off by silly offers tho.

Unless you have time on your hands then you could probably get more selling privately, but might get a lot of fender kickers.

It is a hard thing to get right Graham, but, he has to sell his boat the same as you. I would imagine he is as keen as you to sell, so it's a bit of compromise from both parties. If he is going to sell your boat on in the spring, he will do ok I bet. I would push a little harder. Good luck.

If i was you i would just get shot and save the hassle of selling privately, despite what Ritchie say's, the boating/marine market is on it's arse (same as cars), have a look on the various websites selling boats there are thousands for sale.......take along look at how long they have all been up for sale.

The only boats selling are the very cheap ones, not many people these days have the cash for expensive boats and are not willing to take out long loans in such uncertain times, that added to the cost of expensive marina fees makes boating out of the reach for many individuals, unless of course the are a people clubbing there funds together.

well i have just sold mine private and lucky for me i only had 1 time waster and the guy who bought it was a proper gent i had the boat on ebay and would recomend you dont put it on there i had phone calls at stupid oclock at night asking stupid things and a few dodgey mails like this

i would wait untill summer before you decided to do anything as you get a much better price and interest

The boat we are looking at is with a private seller, not a dealer and we offered him a lower than he was after cash price. Micky told him otherwise we would have to sell ours first. He then rang Micky back and stated a price part exchanging ours which we were happy with and like everyone says, no hassles and the easiest option. The last couple of days though he is going a bit cold and starting to pick faults.
I am the same as you Ray, I can't be arsed with hassle and confrontation/bartering. I get enough of it at work!
Micky is away back down for a second viewing today so hopefuly all will be resolved one way or the other! The boat will either be on Boatsandoutboards and the likes or off down the country in part ex.
I suppose I have got the easy part of sitting at anchor in Singapore while he brokers the deal! I know one thing though, my phone bill will be horrendous this month!

I was right, the matter is now resolved! The money he wanted to offer us for Growler was no where near the price warrior 150's are going for so Micky is in the process of paying a deposit and we are going to sell Growler privately. I think the reality was he just didn't want the part exchange which is fair enough.
Which site did you sell your's on Deano?
She will be going on Ebay and boatsandoutboards ASAP!
If anyone knows anyone who is after a cracking Warrior 150 with a main 50hp tohatsu engine not yet two years old with PT&T, two plotters(marks removed depending on the price!!!!!), one a combined finder and a rapide trailer tell them to drop me a PM!
She also has a stainless steel gantry,
Nav Lights,
VHF Radio,
Warrior Cover,
Rod Holders, internal as well,
A pilot and co pilot chair,
Aft Bench,
Petrol Tank and lines etc, etc!
I have still got butterflies spending the money but I suppose we are here for a good time not a long time! I am just building up the courage to make the next phone call, to ring the wife and tell her!

Under the circumstances selling privately looks like your best option. That’s what I did just over a year ago, when I traded up. Mine sold quickly and something popular like your warrior should be no problem to sell. Boatsandoutboards generated the most interest and with calls from all over the country and the boat sold within days.
I checked out what boats similar to mine were on the B&O website, took an average of the price, then I picked out all the selling points in other adverts that looked good and applied to my boat when I wrote the advert and sold the boat for cash.

It was a Merry Fisher 585 Legende Norman.
The deals off! A couple of points were niggling away at Micky but primarily the fishing space. Build quality, all the toys and enclosed wheelhouse,cabin space, cooker and sink, coxwains and co-pilot chair, two berths etc but the fishing area was no bigger, if not smaller than our Warrior 150. It's a joint boat so if Micky's not happy that's it. No point buying a boat that you regret I suppose!
The conclusion is that it is going to be impossible to stay under 6metres(budget berth at Amble) and have an enclosed wheelhouse and a good amount of fishing space. Over 6 metres and take the hit of increased fees it is!
I think Ray has already came to the same conclusion and bought an over 6 metre bigger boat!
Back to the drawing board! Inboard diesels are now on the list as oposed to outboards only!
Worst case scenario is another season with Growler and off fishing when I get home in two weeks time which isn't too hard to take. The bank balance stays healthy-ish as well!

Micky said something was just niggling away at him about the boat and it wasn't right. I suppose you know when you know! Spending a big amount as well you have to be certain. I was doing it blind from Singapore!
We will definetly take you up on your offer of a look round Slinky Kate if that's ok. I was just looking at an ocqueteau on justfishingboats.co.uk!
I also have an apointment to make when I get home with one of your crew members!!!.
I am meant to be due home next week but who knows! I have just heard we are off to the bloody Congo which is a good four week passage from Singapore around the Cape of Good Hope! Whether I have to go or not has not been mentioned yet but I haven't heard about anyone relieving me either!
