Well it was that time of the month again and Phil and me were itching to get back to the Mull. We set off 4am Saturday morning and after a relaxing drive with little traffic arrived into Ardwell at 7.30am.
The tackle shop opened at 8 so we went for a walk along the beach where I found a whole Scallop in the sand. At 8 we went into the tackle shop and bought some rag and sandeel and also had a chat with the owner about marks worth fishing. He directed us to Logan Point which was a short walk along from the fish pond at Port Logan.
After about 10 minutes Phil had caught a coaly, then he had a dogfish on, a first for us and something we have wanted to catch for a while. About 5 minutes later I reeled in a small wrasse and Phil reeled in another Dogfish. It then went quiet for a while but the action picked up again with the floats with a few pollack being caught.
At 5pm we headed off to another place the tackle dealer recommended called Ardwell back. Here we were targeting bass although nothing came of it so we set up camp at West Tarbet for the night. Sunday morning we fished West Tarbet with floats and spinners but there was nothing happening so we decided to take a risk and head up to Cairnryan to a pier recommended by our local tackle shop.
This pier was perfect for Mackerel and everytime the ferry came past the bait fish would be driven inshore with the mackerel in hot pursuit where we were waiting with our feathers. Overall we must have got about 30 Mackeral in 10 minutes and the bag weighed in at 9lb, were saving these as bait for the next trip to Wales.
We were also bottom fishing off this pier and we got a dogfish each on baited feathers. There were also a couple of small pollack and whitey caught on feathers by Phil. A lot of people had told us about the massive conger that live under this old breakers pier, one guy told us about his personal best of 42lb!
We spent the night in Ardwell with a cracking fire and good food. Monday morning came and I was feeling a bit weary after 2 days of camping so I thought the perfect solution was to go for a swim in the sea. This was not such a good idea as the sea felt close to freezing so it was a very brief affair, but I did manage to get fully under water and I felt very refreshed.
We headed back up to Cairnryan for Mondays fishing and caught a few Mackerel and a couple of pollack, and lots of starfish! We called it a day at 6pm and got back into Sunderland for 9pm looking very tanned.
