too many mackerel?

Reading some of the reports I have to give a wry smile. "can't get through the mackies". In the 80,s we were faced with a similar situation and used similar remarks. Then the Russian factory ships moved in and decimated them. All of a sudden the mackies weren't there anymore and neither was anything else. It took a good few years for them to return and for the fishing to improve. We need the macks, herring , sprats, sandeel etc if we are to enjoy rich fishing so don't complain about them, be glad they are here, I know I am.

I'm glad they're here too. They're to me part of a good day fishing trip especially when there aren't many cod and ling to take home.

Mackerel are about the only fish in the upper Clyde, apart from the odd Pollock.............................. we love them!

I certainly remember going out of the Tyne on the "Bridget Lass" numerous times in the late 70's and early 80's and never seeing a single mackerel caught in the summer, indeed, I don't ever recall catching any during the 4 years or so that I spent fishing with the lads from Winlaton bus depot on the "Lass".

The only mackerel I recall catching in those days were the few we caught on Loch Long, fishing from my brothers cathedral hull dory. (I also recall us being pursued and then stopped by the Marines in a rigid raider, after straying too close to the Finnart oil terminal.)

Don't moan about the mackerel, think yourselves lucky they're there at all.
