Took the 525 Mag Xtra out last night

I added the two extra magnets before I went out but it's still very very fast!:confused:

As I casted it was still sort of semi birdsnesting. Are you supposed to slow it with your thumb or should the magnets do the work, like they do on my Abu Sports Mag?

On first impressions I'm distinctly unimpressed! Though I know it's something I'm doing wrong :D I can see it going on Ebay or in the for sale section at this rate!

I don't know about the mag extra, but my 525 mags brakes are set one notch off max.

ive been having the same trouble with mine, it seems as though its going to nest, but doesnt.
I always use my thumb to control the speed of it, but make sure u got something on your thumb { bit of bicycle innertube i use} to stop ye thumb getting burned.

It's an easy reel to control, my only gripe is that the slider can accidentally slide without you noticing. Have you checked the spool play? If your end play is too great then it may lead to the problems that you are having. Try moving the spool from side to side and if you have more than minimal lateral movement then you need to tighten your spool down.

how much would you be lookin for if its up for sale mate

:D Not sure yet, our lass bought me it on Friday as an early birthday present.

Yep, the reel seat has some old innertube attached to it and it's perfect for the job! Thanks to Darren for that! ;)

Yeah, the manual states between 3 and 5 thou of lateral play. Currently set to about 4 thou. :D:D:D Only joking but there's barely any noticeable play on the spool.

I think I was expecting to be able to cast it and not do anything else until the cast was finished. Just as I do on my Sports Mag with the brakes set to around half way. After a while last night I did start to try and control the spool with my thumb and it did overcome the mini birdsnests. Guess I was expecting not to have to do anything with all those magnets in there. :D By the way, how do those magnets slow an aluminium spool down???

if it still too fast just slow the bearings down with red rocket fuel if that fails then try ep90 gear oil
if it is still too fast for you then put bearings in boiling water the when they have got hot drop them in thick grease this will melt the grease and fill the bearings with grease and make the reel very slow

Thumb control IMHO, always have mine hovering there or there abouts, it must lose you a bit of distance but saves your hair (i.e. not pulling it out after yet another birdie) Then again my casting's not up to much. :red:

I have a Supermag extra. Bought last year fo £150 from NE Tackle at Hartlepool.
Had loads of bother nesting etc and was well cheesed off. Tried allsorts. Eventually put it on e-bay but did not make enough money so i kept it.
I then put some 15 lb line on and tried casting at a local field. As i was practising noticed the side plate on the opposite side to the handle had an hairline crack.
Rang Ne Tackle who told me to bring the plate in. Thia was replaced and i put it back on the reel.
It is now spot on. 15 lb line still on and a good shockleader. No brakes took out. Just rinse when i get in and spray with WD40 when dry.

Mick.

If you clean the spool bearings out with lighter petrol and leave to dry for 5/10mins on kitchen paper. Re-oil with 3 drops of gearbox oil in each bearing. You should notice a big difference. With the mags set on full you should have no bother and just back them off a bit at a time to find where the happy medium is depending on the conditions.

i know this may sound silly to you mate, but are you sure the 2 mags you have added are put in the RIGHT WAY,if not you aint gonna see any difference at all in ya reel.Just a thought mate

AFAIK they are. Beneath the two outer magnets on the carrier?? Surely they'll only go in one way. As I'd have thought putting them in the other way around would cause them to repel?

As I said in an earlier post. How the hell do those magnets slow down an aluminium spool. Saying as it's not magnetic.

It's to do with rotation - anything that is a conductor (aluminium, graphite or whatever) spinning in a magnetic field. Google "Lenz's Law" for the full explanation. :)

I find that my mine is over braked , down to 2 magnets now and Yellow Rocket Fuel. Never had any problems with over runs but it does get a little "fuzzy" as the lead slows down. The comments on 15 lb line are well founded IMHO. My reel runs much better with 15 lb v 18 lb. I suspect it as because the final spool diameter, for the same distance cast, is bigger so the angular velocity matches the rate the line is removed better.

Another couple of points I find stop birdnesting.

First, don't fill the spool right up to the lip, leave about 2-3mm of clearance.

Second, put the line on the spool a few days before you intend to use it. I find this bit critical and it's usually inevitable that I will get a birds nest if I try to use it straight after putting the line on.

The red rocket fuel sure slows the reel down, and do you guys soak your line in clod water for 24 hours before putting on to your reel?

Had another venture out with the reel last night, this time though I kept my thumb on the spool slightly whilst casting and it was much better. :) Only one tiny hint of anything going astray but nothing came of it. Beginning to quite like it if I'm honest! :D Who knows, maybe a a few months time I'll be able to loosen off those magnets!! :p

your doing it wrong mate, you dont touch the line, all that will happen then is the line will start to lift more, what you do is touch the bare spool with the side of your thumb, try it :)

PS, Maybe you are overfilling the spool, 3/4 full is enough.
